Sunday Farming With GrowingSmart

Central Pier No. 6 (to Peng Chau)

Come to beautiful and peaceful Peng Chau island to work on our farm project. We start the day by picking up a cheap and tasty dim-sum lunch in the village, before heading to our farming project, where I am hoping to grow the best vegetables in Hong Kong :) ** If you are a vegetarian/vegan - it is advisable to bring your own lunch as options on the island are limited. ** We are setting up a permaculture farm so we use only sustainable/regenerative methods for farming - no nasty chemicals! There are always a variety of interesting and varied projects to work on from building or making something, to using bamboo, to planting, to just sitting or sleeping in the sun...! Sometimes we just clean up. No experience is necessary and everyone is very welcome to learn and try. We always have a very friendly group! We simply do what is necessary that week. If you are interested in hiking also, many volunteers will also hike around the island together after the day of farming, which finishes around 2.30pm. This is an easy hike which only takes about 1.5-2 hours to go around the whole island. Other Information --------------------------- Please be on time at the start. It's very difficult to coordinate different start times :) Please wear farming clothes (long sleeves and trousers for the mosquitoes), strong shoes and bring water. There is a Wellcome island side so you can pick up last minute things there. **Please bring a re-usable lunch box if your'e not bringing your own lunch - we will pick up a dim-sum lunch at the local dim-sum place and this way we can avoid all the polystyrene that they usually pack the lunch in. Thankyou!! **Please collect your food-waste for the week and bring that with you too, if you like! No oil, meat or fish please - only the raw bits and pieces left over from fruit and vegetables. Egg shells and coffee grounds are welcome too. We can use it for our compost on the farm. **Please do not bring children without checking with me first, as there may be dangers on the farm that you need to be aware of. **I would also appreciate it if you would only sign up if you plan to make it. Last minute no-shows are not fair on other members. Thank you! Cheung Chau Beach Clean-up

Outside McDonald's, opposite Cheung Chau Ferry Pier

Dear Sustainability Heroes, You are invited to do your bit for the Environment by taking part in a beach clean-up event one Saturday of each month. The plan involves cleaning up Tung Wan Tsai (Coral Beach) over on Cheung Chau. Since it is a non-gazetted beach, no regular cleaning is undertaken there by government workers. This beach also has the misfortune of the tides regularly transporting laap sap (garbage) onto its shores. So it really could do with some tender loving care from us. Getting to and out of Tung Wan Tsai (Coral Beach) requires a bit of a hike -- but that should not pose a problem for physically healthy adults. After 2-3 hours (max) of clean-up work, we will hike back to civilisation for lunch at one of Cheung Chau's delicious eateries as a reward for our efforts. Meeting point: In front of the McDonald's near Cheung Chau Pier, at 10am. (Aim to take the 9am Ordinary Ferry from Central Pier Number 5.) http://www.nwff.com.hk/route/get_route.php?id=75852f2a-6be6-49bc-bb7a-e9d31f46b41e&route_id=8 What to bring/wear: • closed shoes (as syringes and other medical waste have been found on the beach. For this reason, I also don't recommend bringing children along for the beach clean-up.) • water (at least 1 litre is recommended) • hat and shades/sunscreen, if sunny weather is forecast • rain gear, if rain is forecast • your smile I will provide trash bags and cloth gloves. Please feel free to bring your own rubber gloves and implements such as trowels. The government will pick up the filled trash bags from the beach (above the shoreline) after we are done. If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to post them below.
