What we're about

Hello! We are a critique group in south-east London for confident writers of fiction since January 2018. This is not for the complete beginner, but instead for people actively working on their writing and looking to give and get thoughtful, friendly feedback as part of a supportive community.

It works as follows: The writer hands out copies of their work and then reads it out loud to the group. The group then discusses the work while the writer listens in silence. Each session we critique up to three pieces of writing, so there's a per-session limit per writer of 3,000 words. The three of us who run the group write fiction and are working hard towards professional publication, but past that we are open to genre [due to our personal tastes, no slash, and please go easy on the horror]). We have a couple poets, and a couple playwrights, but fiction is our wheelhouse.

If you would like to join, we require all potential new members to send a few pages of your work to blackheathwriters@gmail.com. This is important so we can get an idea of what you're working on, and ensure a more-or-less consistent standard of what everyone is contributing to the group. Please be willing to contribute both sides - to bring writing to be critiqued as well as critique that of others.

We charge £3 per session (cash or cheque) to cover our costs, and please also purchase something from the venue - the location of which is confirmed once the three of us who run the group have agreed we think you'll be someone we'd like to work with.

Any questions, feel free to contact us via the email above, through a meetup message or via our twitter (@seldnwriters). We all work full-time and have various things going on, so we unfortunately don't always reply right away, but we will get back to you; the gmail tends to be the quickest.

Hope to read your stuff soon!

• What we'll do We will critique your work (up to 3000 words) in a thoughtful and respectful way. We'll cover three people's work each time. • What to bring Please bring some copies of your work for everyone to read; we can share. There is a £3 fee to cover our costs. The venue isn't charging us a hire fee but they do ask we all purchase something from the bar (dinner for 12, a cup of tea, suit yourself!). • Important to know We ask that you send a brief sample of your work to [masked] before signing up - that way we'll get a sense of whether we think we can help you. Once it's confirmed that we can we will confirm the venue.
