What we're about

Hello - it's been a year and we are still going! We are looking for confident fiction writers with some experience to join a critique group in south-east London. This is not for the complete beginner, but instead for people actively writing and looking to give and get thoughtful, friendly feedback.

It works as follows:

The writer reads their work out loud to the group (please bring some copies too). The group then discusses the work while the writer listens in silence, making notes. Each session we critique up to three pieces of writing, so there's a per-session limit per writer of 3,000 words. The three of us who run the group write fiction and are working hard towards professional publication, but past that we are open as to genre [due to our personal tastes, no slash, sorry, and please go easy on the horror]). We have a couple poets, and a couple screenwriters, but fiction is our wheelhouse.

If you would like to join, please send a few pages of your work to blackheathwriters@gmail.com - a page or two will do, it's just a showcase so we can get an idea of what you're working on and so we can ensure a more-or-less consistent standard among the group. But also, since we have built a welcoming and inclusive space, and have unfortunately needed to say this more than once: if the showcase piece you send us is racist or misogynistic we will not let you in. We don't give feedback on showcase pieces either.

We charge £3 per session (cash or cheque) to cover our costs, and please also purchase something from the venue - the location of which is confirmed once we've had a look at your work and think you'll be someone we'd like to work with.

Any questions, feel free to contact us via meetup or the email above.

Hope to read your stuff soon!
