What we're about

Guilford Anti-Racism Alliance (GARA) is an anti-racist, information-sharing, collaborative, discussion-and-action group that has been meeting regularly for more than 10 years.

GARA consists of three partly overlapping caucuses (People of Color Caucus, White Caucus, and Joint Caucus). The caucuses provide safe spaces to challenge individual, institutional, and cultural racism and to develop sustaining networks so that we may continue working towards a more anti-racist society. Through its various members, GARA is affiliated with several local organizations that engage in anti-racist work.

If you are interested in learning more about anti-racism in the Triad area, meeting other like-minded people, and getting involved in efforts aimed at dismantling systemic racism, please join our group. We look forward to meeting new people.

Please click the Pages link above for an explanation of our caucus structure and how GARA defines racism and anti-racism.

THE MEETING HAS MOVED TO ZOOM.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The GARA White Caucus is meeting on Zoom until it is again safe to meet in person. If you are not on the separate White Caucus Google Groups mailing list, send a message to John Moyle via Meetup, and you will be sent instructions for getting on our list.

This is the regular monthly meeting of the White Caucus of the Guilford Anti-racism Alliance. At the meeting we learn about the true nature of racism by discussing specific topics related to personal implicit racism and systemic racism in our society.

All members of GARA are participating as part of Communities United for Public Education, an association of organizations working to improve Guilford County Public Schools. Our present focus is on securing the funding urgently required to repair, expand, and in some cases replace long neglected schools in Guilford County.

We also organize small groups for living room discussions of books on racism in the US, conduct presentations, and work with Guilford County churches and other organizations to help them with their own work against racism.

New members are welcome.

Members of the White Caucus also participate in the Joint Caucus meeting which is held on the fourth Monday of each month at the Nettie Coad apartments. That meeting is listed separately.

Anti Racism People of Color Caucus

Nettie Coad Apartments

The People of Color Caucus meets the 4th Monday at 6pm. We are currently researching the racial history of Greensboro/Guilford County in an effort to see our roots and how far we have come and where we see the effects of this history. We hope to see you all at our meets. Please feel free to bring your dinner or refreshments.

The caucus provides a safe environment for people of color to share information, feelings, experiences, and interactions that have occurred during our lives. Race and racism lives in the lives of people of color in ways that are very different from the impact of race in the lives of white people. We believe that our professional and personal lives are affected by racism and that by having dialogue as a collective, we can emerge as a community capable of restoring the full potential of all of our members.
