Sunday, January 13, 2019 SUNDAY MONTHLY ASSEMBLY
We get to hear from Jerry DeWitt to start the new year.
(See bio below.)
Discussing the subject ‘Faith Vs. Confidence, and what about Hope?’
“Human suffering has been caused because too many of us cannot grasp that words are only tools for our use.
The mere presence in the dictionary of a word like 'living' does not mean it necessarily has to refer to something definite in the real world.”
Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene
“No one thinks of Thursday as Thor’s Day anymore, or of breakfast as breaking a fast.
Modern English has thousands of former phrases and complex words that have congealed into what people now perceive as simple words, such as business (busyness), Christmas (Christ’s Mass), and spinster (one who spins).
Steven Pinker, Words and Rules: The Ingredients Of Language
Discussing the subject ‘Faith Vs. Confidence, and what about Hope?’ Jerry proposes that cultures shape language and vice versa, and that as a community of freethinking humanists we have the unique opportunity to make our language and our very lives more effective by saying what we mean and meaning what we say!
Come on out and join the discussion!
Jerry DeWitts' Christian ministry started when he was just 17 years old. Over the course of his preaching career, he evangelized throughout the Southern United States, assisted at three Pentecostal churches, and eventually held the pastorate of two fundamentalist congregations.
After more than 25 years of ministry, Jerry realized he no longer believed, and that his motivation had actually been humanism (concern for the well-being of people) all along.
Since leaving Christian ministry, Jerry served as the director of Recovering From Religion and as a board member of the Foundation Beyond Belief and The Clergy Project – and he was the first Clergy Project member to go public about his non-belief. He’s been interviewed by The New York Times on multiple occasions; CNN twice; Morning Joe; Time Magazine; NPR twice; Q on CBC; The Christian Post; and many others.
These days, he keeps himself pretty busy:
Host of the Hope After Faith – Between The Pages and Hope After ALL Podcasts
supports the growing secular community in the Deep South, as well as the unique online community via Patreon, that he is building with his son Paul DeWitt
book tours for his memoir Hope After Faith
is working on his next books REASONably Happy, I’m the Ex and Amerigod
and is putting his many years of public service experience (and his humanist world view) to good use as a professional life coach and independent consultant for individuals, companies, and organizations.
A gathering for thought provoking talks for free-thinking people.
Offered by the Humanists of West Florida.
