Introduction to the Gurdjieff Work

In this open-ended introductory series of free, open meetings we will explore the concepts that comprise “the Gurdjieff Work”.

"The Work" is in essence a training in the development of consciousness. Gurdjieff used a number of different methods and materials, including meetings, music, movements (sacred dance), writings, lectures, and innovative forms of group and individual work.

If you suspect that higher levels of consciousness are possible, and you are seriously interested in practical ways to work in that direction for yourself, these meetings might prove satisfying.

In the early part of the 20th century, George Gurdjieff brought a startling idea to the West from his travels and experiences in the East—it is our birthright to experience life with a level of consciousness higher than the level required for our ordinary lives. Over centuries, knowledge about this higher level of consciousness and the specific efforts required to attain it, has become less and less accessible. This forgotten knowledge is, however, still transmitted among people in certain groups where ancient knowledge has been preserved and where the associated techniques to put this knowledge into practice remains intact.

Are you interested in reading introductory material about Gurdjieff's 4th Way system? We can recommend a short book written by one of Gurdjieff's leading students, P.D. Ouspensky, entitled, "The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution". Reading some of this book in advance may help bring some of your most serious questions to the surface, resulting in a more satisfying meeting experience, but reading in advance is NOT required.
