What we're about

A DC Area community of musicians with an interest in Gypsy Jazz. Since starting this group I have met many musicians who love this type of music. Many of them had attempted to play this style years ago but stopped because they could not find others to play Gypsy Jazz with. If that describes you or if you just recently got the bug to play Gypsy Jazz, then this group is for you.

We have weekly jams on most Monday night of the year. The Monday night Jams are located at either the VFW in Takoma Park or at the Brookmont Church in Bethesda. Recently we have been experimenting with a monthly Sunday afternoon jam.

DC Gypsy Jazz Jam (Takoma Park)

Takoma Park VFW Post 350

We play swing music in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. We use the Django Fakebook 2008. I usually bring a couple of extra copies of the Fakebook for new people and guests to use. Meetup.com no longer allows us to keep copies of documents in the groups pages. If you would like to have your own fakebook to work with you need to download it. Do a google search for Django Fakebook 2008 pdf. You will find a couple. We are happy to play songs that are not in the book, but would appreciate charts if you are playing something not in, or in a different key than the fakebook. The VFW in Takoma Park serves drinks and snacks but no real meals. Eat before you come. The VFW would like you to spend money while you are here to help keep their lights on and taxes paid. Hope to see you there.

Gypsy Jazz Jam (Takoma Park)

Takoma Park VFW Post 350

We continue to jam in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Players, singers and listeners welcome. Bring an instrument, bring a friend or just come by yourself. Depending on how many people come we may break into two groups. A couple of people are willing to trade off working with the slow jam group if we have one. We have only done this once so far, but it works. As a basic resource we use the Django Fakebook 2008 which is readily available on the web. Meetup no longer allows us to keep copies on the Meetup group. I usually bring extra copies of the books for new people to use. The VFW in Takoma Park serves drinks and snacks but no real meals. Eat before you come. The beer is pretty cheap. Parking is free. The VFW would like you to spend money while you are here to help keep their lights on and taxes paid. Hope to see you there.
