LEGISLATION AND REFUGE
FOR HEALING THE EARTH
Who we are:
We are a group of volunteers seeking to reverse the impacts of pollution, including wireless or electromagnetic pollution, as well as to enhance democracy, health, and the environment. Routes to accomplish this include legislation and development of alternative, safe alternatives, such as healing spaces, intentional communities, safer infrastructure, and new economic models. We support the slow movement!
We welcome individuals and organizations to work with us to achieve these goals. We will email members on relevant actions (calling legislators or attending political events) and are working on creating different email lists specific to regions (federal, state for now) and issues (refuge, legislation). A number of our members have environmental sensitivities--some are elderly, some parents, some disabled--leading to an emphasis on addressing and preventing environmental pollution. We network with many individuals who remain offline, and try to provide online pages to promote legislative changes.
Please join us!
What we do:
• Support slow movement, democratic, environmentally safe intentional communities (refuge), laws, legislation, infrastructure, workplaces, and institutions.
• Legislative advocacy
• Legal advocacy (currently requests to attorney general)
• Education on environmental risks and better alternatives
• Consider requests for articles & talks
Current Top Focus:
Non-Ionizing Radiation (e.g. wireless, magnetic fields, microwave frequencies, etc.) risks, effects, and alternatives
Our online information includes:
• Risks of wireless, utility meters, broadband-over-powerlines (BPL), cable, and of non-ionizing radiation to plants, people, sensitives, etc. (overview of wireless communications research here--lacking other frequencies),
• Massachusetts legislation on non-ionizing radiation,
• Massachusetts legal and other actions on non-ionizing radiation,
• List of lawsuits for the greater good,
• Key news on non-ionizing radiation (wireless, electrical equipment, etc.),
• Information on halting school wireless, and more!
Other projects include:
• Scientific and medical professional bank of support & initial information on non-ionizing radiation risks,
• Development of intentional healing and slow movement communities (see refuges for why),
• Massachusetts telephone tree and email list for legislative & other action,
• Legislative work to reduce non-ionizing radiation risks (e.g. wireless),
• Development of education legislation,
• Databank of individuals impacted by non-ionizing radiation,
• Information on reducing radiation in schools and potentially other public places.
• Healing Earth Refuge--develop intentional community and connections for environmental health & a better life via member discussions
• Vaccination Racket (Yes, US government covers all liability, so it is a no-risk profit source for companies, but quite a risk to clients given the lack of research transparency & recent research into the immune system)
• Fluoride Fake (Yes, researchers figured out fluoride lacks research support--the old research is extremely weak--and new research indicates fluoride is neurologically toxic)
• Synthetic Chemicals & Pesticides
• Nuclear Radiation (i.e. ionizing radiation)
• Concerns Zika Hype (despite only lab-findings of Zika in 6 cases) might serve genetically engineered mosquito & pesticide industry rather than truth--encephaly can occur from many causes, including genetic (Angelman's Syndrome), weakened immune systems, and ingestion of certain drugs.
What if I am not from Massachusetts and wish to participate?
Although this website is based in Massachusetts, we would be willing to adapt and support forums directed at legislation in other states as helpful and adapting some pages. However, each state should have a group of people already working on these issues--check first. However, we believe that by working together we can consolidate some teleconference events, advertising, and planning in order to save expenses while increasing the support for these issues. Networking would be very helpful, especially for federal legislation. Members can connect geographically in forums--as of April 2016, we have three members in Arizona looking to connect with others in those states, as well as one member in Utah and one in Hawaii. Members can also discuss with organizer and the leadership team the possibility of creating public pages.
Privacy of Meetup Websites:
Emails from Meetup Websites:
To opt-out of general emails from the organization, open a Meetup email and scroll down to remove yourself--a link should be opened allowing opt-out of specific items. Meetup once sent many emails, but has recognized the error and is providing alternatives. It is possible to limit all emails, and only visit the website to join forums. To follow or later remove yourself from a specific forum question, opt in to the question and, when satisfied, opt out later.
This group is not a non-profit organization, although it would be nice to become one at some point in order to fund-raise for refuge & other interests. The work of this site has been done for free, and the site is still funded by Kirstin. However, sponsorship of this website's cost would be very welcome. If you wish to donate please send a check to Kirstin Beatty at 149 Central Pk. Dr., Holyoke, MA 01040. Any donations would go to the organizer, Kirstin, to help cover expenses of the site & advocacy needs. Checks are suggested because the chip-in button removes a percentage of the funds for the transaction and also for the corporation. Another option for supporting our work is purchasing the organizer's teaching materials online, for which about half goes to Kirstin.
Please keep in mind this group is not a nonprofit, although we currently do not make a profit and are not a business!
Removal from this group would be based on interfering with the goals and aspirations of this group, including disrespectful behaviors, harassment, or misuse of group for sales. Joining this group means you accept the terms that you are responsible for yourself and your dependents. Membership can be revoked at any time for any reason, and misbehavior will be reported to Meetup.com.
ADDITIONAL NON-IONIZING RADIATION INFORMATION:
Is non-ionizing radiation from electronic or electromagnetic technology truly a risk in the USA?
Yes. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Environmental Medicine recommend new electromagnetic radiation standards that will reduce exposure, especially with respect to non-ionizing radiation. Allowable electromagnetic radiation levels in the USA are among the highest in the world. Sources of exposure include power lines, smart utility meters, cellular towers and antennas, baby monitors, cell phones and wireless internet.
Recent studies of electromagnetic radiation exposure find substantial evidence of increased risk for childhood and adult leukemia, childhood and adult brain tumors, and increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS. Similar research demonstrates links to infertility, autism, genetic damage, sleep problems, electromagnetic sensitivity, and headaches. Environmental research indicates damage to bees and other pollinators, plants, and animals--including infertility and loss of direction. Children are at greatest risk, and should be protected in daycare centers and schools.
How else could electronic or electromagnetic technologies be a risk?
Aside from effects of radiation on health, cyber attacks on wireless utilities can lead to loss of heating or other utilities, or home thefts. Wireless cars are similarly vulnerable to hacking which could lead to loss of life. Integration of technology with life, whether Bi-Fi, internal microchips, or synthetic biology poses new safety & moral questions relevant to the environmental and human health. Nuclear facilities, which use ionizing radiation, are reaching the end of intended life spans. Extensive storage of data may pose the risk of data abuse or extensive energy usage. Attention needs to be given to limiting or designing technology to insure public safety & prevent loss of liberty due to surveillance. Limits should insure that technology is beneficial to democracy, rather than to self-serving interests of government or industry.
Why would business sell anything dangerous or government fail to protect its people?
Besides money and the possibilities of power via wireless or electronics, old scientific theories wrongly assumed this type of radiation, non-ionizing, was safe. Today, research shows that mechanisms non-ionizing radiation causes biological damage appear different than the mechanism recognized for nuclear or ionizing radiation. However, old beliefs are hard to break and the trickle down of knowledge is slow, especially since the science is complex.
Secondly, our free-for-all business system fails to set any safeguards requiring proof of safety. As far as new technologies and chemicals, a smart system would require short- and long-term studies investigating biological, toxic impacts on numerous body systems and the ecosystem. Instead, consumers must prove harm by going to court with evidence of personal harm. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SYSTEM--this system allowed nuclear radiation to be used in shoe stores for several decades. This system must be changed to the precautionary principle, or require businesses to prove safety.
Where can I get more information ?
If unable to use the internet often or if more suitable, please join our Massachusetts telephone tree to stay updated on legislative priorities and calls for practical action. A current tri-fold brochure may be found under our files here, including a newer one-sided flyer about utility meter issues.
Reputable organizations, associations, and groups worried about the health risks of wireless and non-ionizing radiation can be found listed under the files with online links here. The Bioinitiative Working Group details non-ionizing research effects--see the Table of Contents or its Summary for the Public. Our brochure is easy to read, but more information can be found by scrolling through our Table of Contents (see key words EMF or electromagnetic).
How can I help, even if I do not wish to call my legislator?
Please keep abreast of legislation and contact your legislator for change. For example, if in Massachusetts, please join our Massachusetts telephone tree to stay updated on legislative priorities and calls for action, and/or regularly help with or check our Massachusetts forums and legislative pages. Help is needed to keep tabs on the progress of legislation as well as on legislative decisions.
Please share information on our focus issue, with the information for this website. Print and share our tri-fold brochure or a newer one-page flyer on smart meters, both listed under files. A recommended list of information specifically for doctors and lawyers is available here. Write a letter to editor about the issue and reference this website. Consider printing and sharing these materials with local lawyers, doctors, politicians, and others, and suggest they contact us to lend or build support.
Join our online group to show strength in numbers and support for our non-ionizing radiation and other environmental health legislation. Make a donation (information at bottom of page) to support our website costs and advocacy.
Note from Organizer:
Someone I met in 2014 liked my idea for a refuge for individuals with sensitivities, and then began soliciting donations with the pronoun "we" as if I, Kirstin, was included and seeking developers along with requesting folks provide information & investment to her--it came across as if I were part of and supporting this campaign. While it would be great to receive funding for a safe community, she acted alone in requesting donations. I did not want to solicit donations when there was no guarantee of being able to provide one. Networking to see how to create something is great, and donations to support this cause are great, but I can't see how to take donations for refuge when everything still depends and is being worked out. So I am not currently soliciting donations for refuge, although donations are welcome to maintain this site.
