HNLondon in 2013

Dear All,

Last year has been phenomenal for HNLondon. We now have over 4,000 members and nearly all of the year's events were full to capacity. We managed to attract some great speakers who you would normally only see at top tech conferences. I feel like we are only just getting started and look forward to planning more events which benefit the community. Each week I get sent ideas and suggestions for additional events and projects, from running hackathons to providing advice and support with fundraising.

Anyone who has put on an event of any kind knows the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. As we have grown, getting HNLondon organised has become a major task which consumes more and more of my time each month. I am committed to making the event sustainable and hope that you HNLondon community members feel the same. In order to keep the event going we need to raise some funds which would enable us to do more. I propose, starting with the next event, to start charging a small entry fee. I intend to keep it low and affordable so the event remains accessible to all. We do have sponsorship, but it is not something that is reliable and soliciting those funds is time consuming. Charging an entry  fee would enable us to manage the event more effectively. At the moment the events get booked out in a few days and many who want to come end up on a long waiting list, while some who reserved places do not turn up or cancel at the last minute. People who are committed to coming to the event will have a better chance of getting in and getting the most out of the presentations.

I think this small change will enable me to direct my time and energy to events that you want to attend and help support our tech scene. If you would like to give some feedback on how we can make this work, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

I look forward to seeing you at the next HNLondon events of 2013.
