What we're about

HOME is a weekly WEDNESDAY NIGHT (and now on Saturdays too!) dance class that doesn’t have set steps or moves and you can dance any way the music moves you – there’s no way to get it right or wrong.

Movement is a simple, powerful and creative way to open up, shake it out, settle the mind and discover the deeper, wider, fascinating parts of who we really are.

The 5 rhythms is a movement practice designed to navigate us through this discovery. It maps out and guides us back to our essential, spontaneous and vital selves. Taking us back into that deep and sacred place within ourselves we long for. That place we call HOME.

Chris Connors, Liz Baron Cohen and Stuart Phillips are accredited 5 rhythms teachers who live in and love the great metropolis of London.

We start with a warm up that lasts approximately half an hour where some people stretch while others just start to dance gently. Often it helps to start on the floor, moving gently and feeling your weight supported. Try to get warm and get moving any way that feels right for you.

After this the main dance begins where there is some instruction/guidance from the teacher – sometimes this is a lot and sometimes very little.

Most classes comprise some solo dancing, some partner work and some dances as a whole group. You do not have to take a partner or join in the group the most important thing is to be true to yourself at that moment. However if you find yourself always avoiding partners or joining in, this is a safe place to practice breaking/changing your patterns.

As the name suggests the rhythm and tempo of the music will usually progress through 5 rhythms in a wave from flowing music to stacatto (rhythmic music) to chaos and back down to lyrical (lighter music) and stillness (music for moving with the quality of stillness- like in tai chi) .

We look forward to seeing you dance your hearts out on our dance floor, love Liz Chris and Stuart

You do not need any experience in dance - only a desire to move your body and a willingness to explore - if you have a body then you are dancer already! This is a space to dance your dance, after all, if you don't do your dance who will? Generally we begin the class with a warm-up to simply stretch your body and to allow yourself to relax into movement. You will then be guided through a 'wave' of music and movement, being guided by the 5 Rhythms of the practice - Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness throughout which you have the opportunity to simply create your own dance movements. Sometimes you will be dancing on you own, and there may also be occasions where you will be invited to dance with a partner or in a small group Have you ever danced like nobody’s watching? Danced with freedom, without a care in your mind? What would that be like? How would that feel? Whether or not you want to come to relax after a stressful week at work, or to shake it all out and let your hair loose, or simply to move and dance to your own rhythm, this Friday night 5Rhythms dance class will definitely invigorate you. See you on the dance-floor! Stuart is an accredited 5Rhythms teacher. He first danced the 5Rhythms in 2007 and has been teaching since 2018. His teachings are practical and are rooted in inviting awareness to the physical body that we each inhabit. His work has been described as bringing clarity and simplicity to the practice of embodied movement... "I am discovering for myself that the 5Rhythms is the practice of awakening the body that enables us human beings to begin to unravel for ourselves who we are underneath all those layers". Stuart's classes count towards the 5Rhythms Teacher Training prerequisite hours (waves). About 5Rhythms: 5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice—a practice of being in your body—that ignites creativity, connection, and community. Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform suffering into art, art into awareness and awareness into action. Wherever the 5 Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, the change, to support, and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego's hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge walking, rock-star part of ourselves that yearns to be free. Creativity. Connection. Community. Check out Dance Movement 5Rhythms® http://meetu.ps/c/4yT5D/1xGJb/a on Meetup www.5rhythms.com

We need never be separate from our practice because in so many ways we never can be - the 5Rhythms is as much a design for life as it is a design for living life no matter how life shows up. May we take this seemingly unprecedented time as an opportunity to continue to move our bodies, to shake up firmly rooted systems of thought, old patterns of behaviour and emotional responses that just won’t work anymore and finding renewed vigour in those that do, so that we may discover new ways of being in service to our loved ones, our elders, our youth and little people, neighbours, friends and relatives so that we emerge deeply connected to all that is common within us. Please come as you are - there are no steps to learn! Book here: https://bookwhen.com/danceathome Cost: sliding scale - donate what you can afford Stuart is an accredited 5Rhythms teacher.
