In this full-day training we will be building a beautiful website with HTML and CSS. We want to help you understand CSS better, this is why we designed this course to focus more on CSS and use just basic HTML.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
What is CSS and Why CSS
Nowadays, we're used to see beautiful and colorful pages. They excite us, entertain us or convince us to buy stuff on the web. All of that is possible because of the CSS language which provides way to attach style, color, font or image to particular parts of a webpage. In this module we will explain how CSS and HTML come together and become BFFs.
What are the core principles of CSS
If you look at the typical book on let's say CSS3, you may be surprised to see that the book has over 500+ pages. Luckily you don't have to memorize all of them. There's only a handful of principles which you must know, and the rest you can look up on google. We will focus on those core principles.
What is the box-model concept
The box-model concept is one of the main pillars of the CSS. We will explain in plain English what it means and how it affects the layout of your pages. Also we will help you to start thinking in terms of boxes.
How to work with margins, padding and borders
Making pages have the layout you want is largely dependent on how you use spacing between the elements. In this module we will make margins and padding your allies, and not your enemies.
What are CSS selectors and how to use them to adjust styling
Concept of selectors is another fundamental pillar of CSS, but also probably the first really confusing topic to understand. People are confused by selectors because there's too many of them and often they seem to be doing the same thing. We will try to bring and order into the messy world of selectors and provide you with some aids and mnemonics to remember the main ones.
How CSS cascading works
Yet another fundamental pillar of CSS and yet another confusing one. The key to understanding this part is to think about the page as a tree. Then cascading becomes visual and obvious. So be ready to do some tree magic.
Most important CSS properties
There's close to 400 CSS properties supported by modern browsers. We'll try to get by with 20-30 properties to make our site useful.
How to work with fonts in browser and introduction into web-typography
The easiest way to make your page readable is by improving it's typography, that is - fonts. We will look at how web-fonts work and try to get some fonts from Google Fonts and Adobe Typekit.
Designing responsive websites with the help of @media queries
You've read many times that over half of the traffic which an average site receives, comes from mobile devices. They have smaller screens than desktop and your site has to adjust. This is done with the help of concept called @media queries.
Fundamentals of Chrome Developer Tools
Chrome Developer Tools is pure wizardry. It's right there in your browser and allows you to view what's under the hood of any webpage with a single click. You can play with the page style, change fonts and debug problems with layout. This is a true swiss-army-knife of anyone who develops web pages of any complexity. And we will get a taste of it!
