VR/360 Video Deep Dive

Get into the nitty-gritty of VR and 360 video with McClatchy's leading video innovators. This is a place to dig into how some of the country's best VR storytellers make their work — from planning to software to stitching to publication. You'll get time to ask your technical questions and insight on what's next in the field.

Ben Connors:
Ben is the Lead for Emerging Video Products at McClatchy. In this role, he guides a small unit focused on experimentation, special projects & product development in fields like VR, AR & Interactive Documentary.

His past endeavors include serving as an executive producer during the development of AJ+, teaching 360° VR video production for SideXSide Studios, helping The Washington Post launch PostTV, creating the Webby award-winning interactive talk-show 'The Stream' for Al Jazeera English, and working as a video editor and producer for Al Jazeera English and The Washington Post. On the side, Ben serves as CEO of the 'Last Graph,' a social action platform for storytellers and their audiences. Started in 2014 with a Grant from the Knight Foundation, the Last Graph provides content creators with a tool to generate embeddable and interactive calls to action. It also provides readers with a dashboard for charting their social and environmental impact.

He likes riding a bike, drinking craft beer and reading science fiction.

Meghan Sims:
Meghan leads the technical efforts of the national video team, works with McClatchy newsrooms on equipment and systems, analyzes video traffic and helps maintain the video platform. Meghan comes from The Washington Post, where she built the Post’s video infrastructure and was part of the leadership team that launched PostTV. She’s also a fantasy sports enthusiast and movie aficionado.

We'll be in the AMAZON room on the 6th floor of CIC Miami. Tell them you are here for Hacks/Hackers at the front desk and they will send you up.

    Hey All,
As part of the presentation, I'm planning to do a quick walkthrough of stitching with Kolor AVP and APG. If you want to follow along on your own system you can download some sample video and grab the trials of the software from here: http://www.ben-connors.com/hackshackers/

Yes, volumetric capture with sensors, lightfield cameras, and video photogrammetry. Thank you

Those are pretty deep cuts Praveen. We're looking at rgb-d for volumetric video. Lytro and 8i style rigs are very expensive, and not terribly portable, so I don't know a ton about them, but I look forward to discussing with you, maybe you can teach me something. :)

Hey All, Excited to meet everyone. I've been planning to take you through the Stitching process in Kolor AVP and APG. And also show you some of the volumetric stuff we're planning to use. What else do you want to cover? Call it out, and I'll do my best to hit on things.

I hope all is well...... I heard a lot of conflicting reports about your brother John and your mom Sarah were in hiding. I want to thank your family for their sacrifices.
