It's an Election Data Fiesta!
Details
We’re not even midway through the campaigning and already the 2019 general election is taking its toll on journalists. So much data available in so many places, how to make sense of it and figure out fact from fiction? Elections are all about the numbers, and South African journos need to brush up on their political math.
Hacks/Hackers Johannesburg wants to help. We’ve invited top election data nerd Paul Berkowitz to talk us through the numbers he’s crunching and how to understand them, and give us some insight into a joint project between his company and Tiso Blackstar that aims to keep election reporting accurate and honest.
As if that wasn’t enough, we’ll also be hearing from Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) about the resources that they are making available throughout the election period to help separate fact from fiction. From regular updates on social media stats to deep dives into the world of electoral misinformation, MMA is looking to keep the media up-to-date and focussed on the truth.
Whether you’re a journalist, a journalism student, a civic tech hacker or just interested in the process of election reporting with data, Hacks/Hackers JHB wants to welcome you.
