The first Hacks/Hackers Montreal meetup of 2018 will be all about telling original stories with sensors. How do you tell stories with sensors? It's easy. Take a small affordable computer like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi, attach a detecting device of your choice, and start collecting data that no one else has. This meetup is all about the basics to get you started.
We'll be giving out five air quality sensors from SensorUp as attendance prizes. So come in large numbers!
Our presenters will be:
Roberto Rocha, CBC Montreal
A quick overview of sensor and drone journalism and examples of what has been done.
Jessy Yameogo, Deloitte Canada
Internet of Things (IoT) devices outnumbered the world's population in 2017. By 2020, it is estimated that there will be up to 20.4 billion connected "smart" devices that use sensors to measure the physical world. Yameogo will demystify this world and explain how one can leverage these devices to generate or collect data, that can then be used to tell a story.

Steve Liang, SensorUp
Traditional air monitoring solutions are expensive to set up and maintain. As a result, we do not know the air we breath every day. In this presentation Dr. Liang will present (via Google Hangout) the Smart City Starter Kit for Air Sensing, a new citizen-based Internet of Things solution for air quality monitoring providing hyper-local air quality data with a fraction of the cost of the traditional solution.
Martin Reisch, drone photographer https://www.instagram.com/safesolvent/
Reisch is a prolific photographer and videographer who has taken captivating shots of Montreal from above with a drone. Drones can be used with sensors, and Reisch has plenty of experience in the do's, don'ts, and regulations of droning in Canada which he will share.
