Winter Solstice Celebration at Stonehenge
Join us at Stonehenge for this magical Winter Solstice Celebration. It is a very special opportunity to enter the stones free of charge which are usually cordoned off to the public. There will be a Druid ceremony to welcome the sun on what will be the shortest day of the year. Sunrise will be just after 8am. Usually access to the site is from 7.30 am until 10 am. To find out more about Yule and the Winter Solstice go to the link below: http://www.thewhitegoddess.co.uk/the_wheel_of_the_year/yule_-_winter_solstice.asp It is now thought that Stonehenge was originally built for people to gather at the Winter Solstice. PLEASE WEAR WARM CLOTHING AND WALKING BOOTS AS THE GROUND IS UNEVEN AND CAN BE ICY. WE WILL WALK ABOUT 1 MILE DOWN TO THE STONES FROM THE VISITOR CENTRE. THOSE WITH MOBILITY ISSUES CAN CATCH THE SHUTTLE BUS FREE OF CHARGE THERE AND BACK. N.B. It is an unusually early start to meet at 5.15 am but we did it last year and it worked well. English Heritage are limiting the car parking near the site and charging for cars to park in the Stonehenge Visitor Centre car park. It is £5 per car so we will car share down to the site. If we don't get the car parking spaces we will end up parking a long way from the site and have to walk for up to an hour to get to the stones. The car park opens at 6am and when it is full they will turn cars away. Byway 12 is also shut and the roads around will be coned off for parking. They will also not allow cars to park down the A344 (the road from the visitor centre to the stones) The visitor centre cafe will be open from 6am and there will be food and drink available. Toilets will be available there as well as on site at the stones. Every year English Heritage are making it harder for people to attend this event. However, I am determined that we will continue. You can access English Heritage's information below: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/stonehenge/plan-your-visit/winter-solstice-at-stonehenge/ We will have breakfast at the Amesbury Archer afterwards. THIS MEET UP WILL TAKE PLACE SUBJECT TO WEATHER CONDITIONS. ENGLISH HERITAGE WILL ONLY ALLOW ACCESS FOR THIS EVENT IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

    What we're about

Welcome to this fun and friendly group!

Founded over six years ago, we were the first Hampshire county walking Meet Up group. We're still going strong and that's down to our dedicated organisers and loyal, friendly members. The group has always been run from the view that walking should be a pleasure, taken at a steady pace, not a route march. Our walks give time to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery and reconnect with nature. Lots of photographers come on our walks as it gives them time to compose great shots. Walks vary in length from 3.5 miles but average 6-7 miles. There are on occasion longer walks of 9-12 miles. We also run heritage walks which start from one mile upwards. We like to do pub lunches as well so if you like the sound of what we do then please join in the fun.

The group is open to people aged 18 and over and is not just for single people. We have couples who walk with us as well as those who have partners who perhaps don't like walking. I do recommend that you wear appropriate walking boots or shoes and outdoor weather attire when attending any walks.

We also put other social events on as well as walks such as meals out, visits to historical/cultural places and boat trips.

We also regularly put on guided heritage walks at sites in Hampshire and surrounding counties. The most popular ones have been Stonehenge, Avebury and St Catherine's Hill.

There is no annual fee to join the group and not every meet up has a meet up fee. More than a third of the meet ups have no meet up fee. It is just £2 (payable in cash on the day) to attend most walks. Some heritage guided walks are £5.00 again payable in cash on the day. Other third party/commercial events are also advertised on the meet up such as murder mystery dinners or ghost walks. The cost of these will vary and tickets will usually need to be purchased directly from the third party on an individual basis except where otherwise indicated by the organiser.

For a group to work well and provide good events, we naturally have to have some T's and C's. So please read below for our terms and conditions. They aren't too onerous honest!

    1. You must be 18 and over to be a member. All guests must be adults. No school or pre-school age children are allowed at our events.

    2. When signing up for an event, please see this as a commitment to attend. We understand that from time to time life happens and something unexpected comes up that means you have to cancel. However, continual cancellations to attend meet ups mean that you will be removed from the group.

    3. Two no shows in a row will result in an instant removal from the group. A no show is where a member has RSVP'd Yes for an event but does not show up. Please note that you will be put down as a no show if you turn up for a walk late and the group have already set off. Make sure you allow plenty of time to get to the meet up site, park and make contact with the organiser.

    4. Members should not leave messages regarding non attendance on the meet up site at short notice (within one hour of the event) Members must contact the host by mobile phone i.e. text to advise of any late RSVP changes. This is because organisers may not have access to the internet particularly if they are travelling to site and/or there is a poor 3G signal due to a rural location.

Why not come along and join in the fun!

    best wishes
