Applications are growing more and more complex every day. Whether it's orchestrating calls between heavily asynchronous and distributed services, managing complex user interactions, or simply trying to take advantage of the massive scale of the cloud, most modern applications today have very complex business processes. Invariably many can also take advantage of orchestrators and workflows to help manage this complexity. There have been many platforms over the years that have worked to address this challenge from classic platforms such as Windows Workflow Foundation and BizIQ to modern cloud-native solutions on Azure, such as Logic Apps and Power Automation (formerly Flow). Many of these platforms unfortunately also suffer from the impedance mismatch going from traditional code to declarative workflows. In this talk, you're going to learn how Durable Functions, an extension to Azure Functions, can help you manage the complexity of modern cloud-native applications all from within your code, in our case .net, and with all the power of an advanced Serverless platform. We will start with an overview of Azure Functions before moving on to discovering how we can significantly simplify several common patterns such as function chaining, fan-out/fan-in, async HTTP calls, monitoring, human interaction, and aggregation with Durable Entities. Along the way, you'll learn how Durable Functions works behind the scenes and get insights into the developer and debugging experience.
