Selections: EAST OF EDEN by John Steinbeck and HEFT by Liz Moore Optional Nonfiction: DIVIDED WE STAND by Marjorie J. Spruill EAST OF EDEN is a biblical account of Cain and Abel echoed in the history of two generations of the Trask family in California. Marriage, parenthood, succession, inheritance, and sibling rivalry make up the bulk of the book's conflict (NPR). HEFT is the story of two improbable heroes whose sudden connection transforms both their lives. It’s about love and family found in the most unexpected places. DIVIDED WE STAND traces the status of women and families today to events surrounding the National Women’s Conference in 1977, a federally funded initiative to identify a national women’s rights agenda--accessible child care, elimination of discriminatory insurance and credit practices, reform of divorce and rape laws, federal funding for abortion and civil rights for lesbians. But the conference had an unintended consequence: the unleashing of a women-led “family values” coalition that cast feminism not just as erroneous policy but as moral transgression. This coalition found common cause in their deep religiosity and even ties to white supremacists.

What we're about

This is your literary and topical book discussion group in Central & North Phoenix! We choose to discuss books that have been reviewed on National Public Radio programming. We are in our fifth year of existence. Book selection is a collaborative process among the regularly attending members of the Meetup. If you enjoy and appreciate thoughtful discussion of literature, please join us. See below for our next month 's meeting and book choices. Occasionally we may have a social meeting such as a brunch or gathering to watch a movie related to a book we've read.
