West Tiger 3 via the Section Line Trail

Let's do an evening work-out hike, up to winter wonderland, on the Section Line Trail on Tiger Mountain.

Hiking conditioning required for this hike: This is a steep work-out hike (on a nice route on a pretty trail); to sign up for this hike, you must be doing hikes of 4+ miles and 2000+ feet vertical gain (or equivalent aerobic athletic activity, such as running or long-distance cycling) on a regular basis.

When signing up, please answer the sign-up questions as best you can.  Your answers and the info in your profile need to demonstrate the required level of hiking conditioning.

Mandatory and Recommended Equipment:

Mandatory: Study hiking boots, warm mittens/gloves, warm hat, layered cool and warm clothes, raingear, water and snacks, headlamp.

Recommended: Traction devices. We will encounter lots of snow.  (Microspikes or Yak-Trax) are recommended for this hike. (Microspikes are more rugged, easier to put on, bite deeper on ice, and the preference of most experienced winter hikers. If you purchase Yak-Trax, the Yak-Trax Pro is recommended; the standard Yak-Trax tend to break.)

RSVP and Driving Directions:

This hike is cross-posted.  Please sign up on only one meetup.

We are meeting at the gate where the frontage road turns to dirt.

Hike Details:

• Distance: 5 miles RT.

• Elevation Gain: 2000 ft.

• High Point: 2535 ft.

• Difficulty: strenuous.

• Hiking Time: ~ 2.5 hrs.

• Hiking Speed: fast, 30 minutes per mile.

• Dogs: Hikers only this hike.

Schedule and Itinerary:

• 5:00 PM – Meet outside the gate.

• 5:10 PM – Start hiking on the trail to the large parking lot, then up the regular Section Line route.

• ~ 6:30 PM – Arrive at West Tiger 3, then hike down, via whatever down-route fits the snow conditions (likely a combo of the upper regular Tiger 3 Trail and the lower Cable Line Trail).

• ~ 7:30 PM – Arrive back at our cars.

What to bring (this is what experienced hikers wear and bring, for comfort both uphill and downhill): Sturdy hiking boots, light or medium-weight non-cotton clothing for the uphill, very warm mittens or gloves, light or medium-weight hat, also a warm hat, rain jacket, rain pants, extra non-cotton shirt to change into at the top, warm, dry clothes, preferably fleece, for the downhill, 1+ liters of water, snacks, day-pack large enough to hold all the above, traction devices, headlamp. Optional and recommended: hiking poles, camera, waterproof pack-cover, hot chocolate!

We had a good hike on a nice clear evening. This hike works great as a weeknight workout (... much nicer hike than the Cable Line). I'll post it again soon.
