Details
The second hike of Day 1, we will be flexible on time and locations.
The ocean views from the cliff and the Sand Dune below, absolutely stunning! Looking down Point Mugu Beach (sunset 5:50PM)
DEPARTURE TIME :
- Long hike: Meet at Ray Miller trailhead at 3:15PM. See driving direction below. Start hiking at 3:30 PM at Chumash trailhead. Plan on about 2-2.5 hours for 5+ miles RT, with 1200+ft vertical gain and about that much loss (a nice workout for elevation, distance and pace. It's a shuttle hike. Drive to Ray Miller trailhead and leave few cars, then carpool to Chumash trail trailhead.)
- Check out Monarch Butterflies at Sycamore Canyon
- Point Dume https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=623
Rating: This hike is rated Level 2/Intermediate due to terrain, elevation gain. Click RATING TABLE to learn more about hike levels

ROUTE : We will hike Point Mugu Peak and loop to La Jolla Canyon trail. Taking Chumash trail up to Point Mugu Peak, then taking a loop down to La Jolla Canyon back to Ray Miller trailhead. We have ocean view most the way and drop down to Jolla Canyon. Stop by Point Mugu Rock for sunset photos, then Back to campsite for group campfire
ESSENTIALS : wear good traction hiking shoes, bring water, snacks and flashlight. There is no shade on this hike, but a great view at sunset and nice moon rise if it's clear. Wear long pants as a little bit of the trail with overgrown, and a jacket as it's still cool near the ocean.
DIRECTIONS : To get to Ray Miller Trailhead drive west on the Pacific Coast Highway, 22 miles from Malibu Road to La Jolla Canyon. Those coming from the Ventura area, will find it 4 miles beyond Las Posas Road. It is located across the highway from the western end of Thornhill Broom State Beach. A fee is charged for parking, so stop at the sign. Drive about 400 yards up the canyon and park in a paved lot on the left. Water is available in the picnic/parking area; restrooms are just a few yards up the trail.
Chumash trailhead is at 34.091680-119.065812 (If you see Point Mugu Naval Base, you are going too far from South PCH heading North; if you go from North PCH toward South, then after passing Naval Base, the trailhead is on the left side)
