Democrats and progressives came out in droves to flip the San Diego Mayor's office and City Council blue. With the new Democratic leadership, Mayor Gloria and the San Diego City Council have an unprecedented opportunity to live up to their promises of pushing for racial justice, community health, affordable housing and bold climate initiatives.

But what did Todd Gloria propose? An increase to the police budget of $19 million (pushing it to $600 million) while drastically cutting library hours and laying off librarians. While proposing just a fraction of the police spending to the homelessness crisis and the climate plan. San Diegans overwhelmingly agree that the city needs more investment in education, public health and housing-not more policing which has terrorized our Black and Brown communities. The proposed budget- coming right off the heels of the Chauvin case- is completely out of step with the direction of country and the will of the people. We must speak up.

Join Hillcrest Indivisible during Councilmember Whitburn's (District 3) Zoom forum where he will take public comments about the proposed budget. We will ask him pointed questions and advocate for a budget that puts people, the environment and racial justice at the forefront. Mayor Gloria and Councilmember Whitburn ran on a progressive platform of change and investment in our community-let's hold them accountable to that promise.

The budget forum will be held on May 6th, you can sign up here: https://www.sandiego.gov/citycouncil/cd3/budget-forum-registration
