Wild Presence: Beginning T’ai Chi is a 12-week class series that starts on Monday, May 6. Meetup members are welcome to try the introductory class on May 6 for free, either in-person at Twin Cities Friends Meeting (TCFM) or online via Zoom.
As light as a feather and as rooted as a tree reaching deep into the earth, T’ai-Chi moves effortlessly like a white crane spreading her wings and fluidly like ocean currents streaming through a bed of swaying kelp. T’ai-Chi is an exploration of the flow of nature within our bodies.
T’ai-Chi also invites us to release conditioned pattens that work against our body’s natural motion. During T’ai-Chi practice we gently move attention into places inside our bodies where we can perceive the difference between movement that flows with ease and movement that is strained. Through this discernment we can become aware of habitual movement patterns.
As we let go of these patterns we open to authentic, unconditioned movement and the wild presence of chi inside and around our bodies. The feeling of chi is personal to each of us, but often feels like a tingle, buzzing, warmth, or flow. T’ai-Chi helps cultivate and integrate chi into everyday movement and promotes body awareness, physical health, emotional well-being, and mental equanimity.
For in-person participation we will meet in TCFM's main meetinghouse room. From the main entrance (Grand Avenue side) the room is on the right. Most students like to practice T’ai-Chi without shoes. You can leave your shoes outside the room in the hallway. If you prefer wearing shoes, please wipe the bottoms clean or bring another pair of shoes to wear in the room.
If you would like to participate online, please indicate so in the event chat or send me a direct message and I will send you a Zoom link and tips on taking the class via Zoom. I will also post a Zoom link in the chat a few days before the event.
Sample YouTube videos: T’ai Chi Demonstration and T’ai Chi Warm Up.
If you choose to continue with the 12-class series, the cost is $200 in-person and online and $125 online only.
My background: For nearly 30 years I have started almost every morning with the slow and relaxing motion of T’ai Chi which sets a tone of ease and spaciousness for the day. My first experiences with T’ai Chi, meditation, and yoga were on a study abroad program in Asia in 1992. Soon after I began studying T’ai Chi with Master Robert Larsen, founder of the Birthing Life T’ai Chi Center in Minneapolis and a student of Master Cheng Man-ch’ing.
I started teaching T’ai Chi in 1997 and currently teach in-person and Zoom classes on Monday evenings at the Twin Cities Friends Meeting. During other times of the week, I offer T’ai Chi via Zoom and video courses.
I complement T’ai Chi, which is inspired by the movement of animals, with several nature connection practices, including wildlife tracking. Most summers include a wilderness canoe trip in northern Minnesota or Canada—wonderful places to deepen experience with nature and T’ai Chi. In daily life my wife, daughter, and I are immersed in nature on our rural Wisconsin homestead surrounded by trees and hills.
