What we're about

We are beginning a group for writers that want to write and learn, either short fiction or novels. To get to know each other, we'll start for a month or so as a book club that reads as writers, analyzing books for craft, then quickly morph into a writing and craft workshop.

Email with questions:

Note: This is not a commercial enterprise. There are no costs to participants.

For the first meeting or two, we'll read a book and focus on analyzing the techniques used by the writer in hopes of growing our understanding of craft. Members will vote on our first book. Some options we suggest are Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, The Blindfold by Siri Hustvedt, Less by Andrew Sean Greer, or Norwegian Wood by Huruki Murakami.

From this initial book club, we aim to quickly expand to a program that will focus on multiple areas of writing. With group input and agreement, we will create: (1) a traditional writers' workshop expected to meet weekly, (2) a craft workshop that will meet either weekly or bi-weekly to discuss theory and advanced techniques in fiction writing, in addition to continuing (3) the monthly writers' book club.

Perhaps the most exciting element, funding is secured to hire accomplished writers/teachers to occasionally (once a month or so) guest teach classes for the craft workshop and lead the writer's workshop. We expect to begin the book club ASAP and have everything in place to start the overall program by January 1st, 2019. Initially, the program will be finite (one year with some breaks), but the possibility exists for it to continue indefinitely.

This group is intended to simulate aspects of the rigor of an MFA program while allowing people to continue to work and live their lives here in Los Angeles. Those interested in an MFA, individuals with an MFA who want to keep learning, and those who have taken alternate paths toward understanding and exploring literature would make great candidates for our group.
