This is an informal gathering to discuss Holochain -- the massively scalable, inexpensive post-blockchain framework for writing distributed apps (dApps).

Didn't catch all of that? Don't worry: this meeting is for anyone who wants to learn more about the Holochain project, from expert systems architects and software designers to community organizers, entrepreneurs, and newbies to the Internet Super Highway.

What's it all about?

Today, our online relationships are dominated by centralized corporate web sites and apps. They collect our data and sell it to advertisers who use it to manipulate us. No good. Moreover, centralized systems limit the ability of users to choose how they interact with others on the Internet.

But would if the Internet worked differently, allowing people to connect with each other in whatever way worked best for them, tailored to their local context? Would if each user retained ownership of their data?

Holochain enables peer-to-peer (P2P) applications with user autonomy built directly into its architecture. No corporation or middle man involved. You can think of a Holochain app like a collective. One example: a rideshare app run entirely by riders and drivers. Other great use cases include mutual credit currencies and supply chain solutions.

*Structure

Free flowing conversation. Greg Schaffer, events coordinator (and non developer) for Holochain, will be on hand to answer questions about Holochain's architecture, history, conceptual context, and project updates (specifically upcoming events at CMU!). Some good threads include use cases, specifically as they can be employed to local contexts, and alternative digital (crypto) currencies. We are here to learn from one another!

*Some additional thoughts:

  1. Holochain will be hosted at CMU for a number of events, from Oct. 30 through Nov. 5. You can learn more about those events at holo.host/pgh. You can get your tickets to the developer's workshops with co-founder Art Brock here -- https://www.eventbrite.com/e/holochain-workshop-pittsburgh-tickets-50913068358

  2. If there's demand, we ought to meet again sometime this month.

*Parking and getting there:

There's metered parking on Walnut Street and in nearby lots, as well as free street parking within a few blocks radius.
You can access Walnut Street easily from Fifth Ave. Several PAT buses pass on Fifth Ave., including (but not limited to): 71B, 71D, and the 75.
