Dir: Yoshimura Kozaburo Japan, 1953, Japanese, 110min, 35mm, English and Chinese subtitles Cast: Mori Masayuki, Kogure Michiyo, Otowa Nobuko, Sugimura Haruko Based on the work of Japanese Literature Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata The moral shadings of Kawabata’s post-war masterpiece are illuminated by an ensemble of top-notch talents from the Golden Age of Japanese cinema – flamboyant direction by Yoshimura Kozaburo, concise screenplay by Shindo Kaneto, and awe-inspiring cinematography by Miyagawa Kazuo. Two Vietnamese books for us to discuss as one in not available in the HK library. If you can read both, great...if not, at least one :-) First up is Catfish and Mandala by Andrew X. Pham - the story of an American odyssey—a solo bicycle voyage around the Pacific Rim to Vietnam—made by a young Vietnamese-American man in pursuit of both his adopted homeland and his forsaken fatherland (info courtesy of Goodreads). I have a copy that I am willing to share at our next meeting on 29 April. (Non-fiction) Second book is The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen - there are copies in the HK library. A gripping spy novel, an astute exploration of extreme politics, and a moving love story, The Sympathizer explores a life between two worlds and examines the legacy of the Vietnam War in literature, film, and the wars we fight today. (Thanks again to Goodreads for the info). (Fiction) In honour of the books, we will go to a Vietnamese eatery...called Le Garçon Saigon, 12 Wing Fung St, Wan Chai. I haven't actually been there - if anyone has a another idea, please do suggest.
