Health and Healthcare have always been a very important part of local Hong Kong Culture. During the early days of the Colonial Era, re-settling Chinese brought with them so-called TCM or "Traditional" Chinese Medicine while the British Authorities transported state-of-the-art (for the time) Western "Scientifically" based medicine. Arguments about efficacy have been raging ever since. We now know, however, that the lines between the two systems are much more fluid then had been previously understood. Furthermore, what is most interesting is that overtime Hong Kong has found itself at the leading edge of both Western AND Traditional Chinese Medical Systems.
The Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences 香港醫學博物館 (HKMMS) is a local private museum dedicated to unpacking and presenting this complex history. Whether it's Hong Kong's association with pandemic tropical diseases or the hybrid nature of its Healthcare System, HKMMS is developing ways to help us all understand this most important topic.
Sacred Spaces has been granted an English tour of the Museum housed in the Old Pathological Institute on Caine Road. We'll also get a chance to hear about upcoming educational programs like the Taipingshan Medical Trail Reboot which will hopefully be another Sacred Spaces Event in the not so distant future.
This event has limited space so sign up soon to ensure your spot. This event has a $40 fee which includes adult entrance (without concession) as well as the charge for our docent guide. The fee will be paid the day of the event.
