This is a group for anyone interested in studying Uechi-Ryu Karate. Uechi Ryu Karate is a powerful, half hard/ half soft Okinawan style, which originated in China. It was brought to Okinawa early in this century by Kanbun Uechi and shares many similarities with Goju Ryu karate and the lesser Naha-Te styles of To'on Ryu and Ryuei Ryu. Based on the movements of the Tiger, Crane, and Dragon, Uechi Ryu is characterized by upright stances, circular blocks, grabs, open hand and one knuckle techniques plus low kicking, often using the big toe.

Uechi-Ryū Karate-do is a highly effective system of self defense, a proven method of attaining peak physical conditioning, and a martial art form which can enhance and enrich one's Way of Life.

Uechi-ryu is one of the most popular styles of Okinawan Karate-do practiced today. It enjoys not only a large following in Okinawa and Japan, but throughout the world. Some of the skills developed in studying this martial art can be applied in every day life; awareness, calmness, confidence, mental stamina, and physical strength.

We meet every Saturday and Sunday morning from 8 am to 9:30 am at Magic Island Park, just past picnic area 38 going towards the lagoon. Training is completely free of charge. For regular training session, wear loose comfortable workout clothes. We are affiliated with the International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation (IUKF).

Anyone participating in Honolulu Uechi-Ryu Karate Do Club training for an extended length of time is encouraged to join the IUKF, although it is not mandatory.

Anyone seeking belt rank will be required to join the IUKF at a cost of $50 per year. Testing fees may also apply. Seeking belt rank, however, is NOT a requirement to join the Honolulu Uechi-Ryu Karate-do Club. All that is required is the desire and ability to show up for class.
