Winter Birding at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

Details

On Saturday, January 13, 2018, the Houston Sierra Club will visit Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge (BNWR) to bird and view this wetland and coastal prairie wonderland. The over 44,000 acre BNWR is located in southeastern Brazoria County. We will look for ducks, geese, wading birds, songbirds, shorebirds, and other native wildlife. No experience is necessary!

Bring your day-pack, water, snacks, lunch, camera, field guides, and clothes appropriate for the weather. Hiking will be minimal as we bird from our cars and on short trails in the Refuge. This outing is limited to 30 people. No pets, firearms, or radios. We will put our cell phones on vibrate to enjoy the solitude, quiet, and natural sounds at BNWR.

We will meet to carpool/caravan at 7:30 am in the parking lot just west of the Starbucks (look for Becks Prime) in Meyerland Plaza. Starbucks fronts the 4700 block of Beechnut (near the West Loop South). Look for a silver Honda Civic with lots of bumper stickers.

If you want to meet us at BNWR at 9 am the directions are:

  1. Go south on State Highway (SH) 288 to Business SH 288 (Spur 300) in Angleton.

  2. Exit SH 288 and turn left onto Business SH 288.

  3. Drive south on Business SH 288 several miles until you come to FM 523.

  4. Turn left onto FM 523, go east and then south. After you pass FM 2004 you will go 5.5 miles to Hoskins Mound Road (CR 227)).

  5. At Hoskins Mound Road (CR 227) turn left. Go 1.7 miles and the BNWR entrance will be on your right. We will meet at the Discovery Center on the Refuge.
