Hike Big Creek Scenic Area

Details

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, the Houston Sierra Club will hike Big Creek Scenic Area (BCSA) in Sam Houston National Forest. For fifty-four years BCSA has provided a window into the ecology of the Big Thicket. We were washed out of our proposed BCSA hike in September 2017 by Hurricane Harvey. But in 2018 we will enjoy early spring, new vegetation, wildflowers, and cool weather.

Bring your day-pack, several quarts of water, snacks, camera, field guides, and clothes appropriate for the weather. Long pants are recommended. After the hike, we will go to a restaurant in Cleveland, Texas for lunch. This outing is limited to 20 people. No pets, firearms, or radios. We will put our cell phones on vibrate to enjoy the solitude, quiet, and natural sounds at BCSA.

We will meet at BCSA at 9 am. Directions are:

  1. From Houston, drive 50 miles north on U.S. 59 (Interstate 69) to Cleveland, Texas.

  2. Exit to FM 2025, turn left (north) onto FM 2025, and go 10 miles to FM 2666.

  3. Turn right onto FM 2666, go east 2.5 miles, and turn left onto Forest Road (FR) 221.

  4. Go north on FR 221 about 1.5 miles to FR 217 and turn right.

  5. Go east on FR 217 1 mile and turn left into the BCSA parking lot.
