Hike on Kirby Nature Trail, Big Thicket National Preserve

Details

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, the Houston Sierra Club will not hike in the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge (TRNWR). The TRNWR is flooded. We will meet at the Big Thicket National Preserve's (BTNP) Kirby Nature Trail (KNT) on FM 420 (Kountze, Texas 77625), off of U.S. 69, in Hardin County, Texas.

Bring your day-pack, several quarts of water, snacks, lunch, camera, field guides, and clothes appropriate for the weather. Long pants are recommended. Bring bug repellent. No pets, firearms, or radios. We will put cell phones on vibrate to enjoy the solitude, quiet, and natural sounds of the BTNP. We will meet at 9 am at the KNT parking lot. Look for a silver Honda Civic with bumper stickers.

To get to the KNT from Houston: Go east on Interstate 10 until you cross the Trinity River. Take the FM 563 exit and go left (north) 8 miles. Turn right onto FM 770 and go 9 miles to Raywood. Turn right, go 100 yards, and then left and continue on FM 770 for 15 miles to Batson. At the blinking red light in Batson, turn right onto SH 105/FM 770 and go 3 miles and turn left onto FM 770 and go 7 miles. Turn left onto FM 1003 and go 5 miles to Honey Island. Turn right, go 100 yards, and then left and continue on FM 1003. Go 5 miles on FM 1003 to U.S. 69. Turn left onto U.S. 69 and go 2 miles and turn right onto FM 420. Go about 3 miles on FM 420 and turn into the KNT parking lot on your left.
