OCTOBER GENERAL MEETING:
Update on the Port of Houston Trees & Riparian Enhancement of Ecosystem Services (PoH TREES) Program

On October 14, Deborah January-Bevers of Houston Wilderness will present on The Port of Houston Trees & Riparian Enhancement of Ecosystem Services (PoH TREES) Program. This is a 10-year multi-partner program, facilitated by Houston Wilderness, and focused on green spaces that exist amid the large industrial complexes along the 25 miles of the Houston Ship Channel, and associated tributaries. Using native tree species ecosystem services research, GIS-based data collection and thousands of targeted native Super Trees, Houston Wilderness works with its partners to provide large-scale tree plantings on private and public properties along the ship channel.

The PoH TREES Program is one of the efforts to plant 4.6 million new native trees in the Houston area by 2030. Both the Resilient Houston Plan and the City's Climate Action Plan include planting new trees as a key strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change and address carbon emissions. Trees provide many environmental and ecosystem benefits. They reduce air pollution and stormwater runoff, improve water quality, help lower temperatures, and create habitats for birds, insects and plants. A diverse tree canopy is essential for maintaining biodiversity in urban environments.
