"Houston Environmental Focus on our 5th Ward Neighbors”
Join the Houston Sierra Club to learn about the environmental, social, and economic issues faced by our friends, neighbors, and their families in the 5th Ward of Houston. Reverend James Caldwell, Founder and Director of the Coalition of Communities, will share the challenges of living with creosote pollution, illegal dumping, and gentrification in the 5th Ward. Reverend Caldwell is a member of many organizations: 5th Ward and Kashmere Gardens communities, Port of Houston Authority Chairman's Advisory Community, Healthy Port Community Coalition, Clean Gulf Commerce Coalition, PCORI Baylor College of Medicine's Asthma Study Advisory Committee, Texas Organizing Project, Working America, and People Before Profits.
Reverend Caldwell has a background in public affairs from Texas Southern University. He is a tireless advocate for environmental justice, quality education, financial independence, civil rights, and healthcare. He will help the Houston Sierra Club connect the dots to reveal the intersection of environmental, social, and economic issues which may have been hidden or unknown to the environmental community. Let's get to know who our neighbors are and what kinds of environmental issues they are managing with the goal of finding out how Houston Sierra Club can support and become an ally of 5th Ward environmental priorities.
The event is free and open to the public at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 W Alabama, in Pecore Hall. Main Program starts at 7:30 PM (doors open for an informal social period starting at 7:00 PM). Visitors always welcome!
Note: Houston Sierra Club arranges programs on a variety of topics for educational purposes. The scheduling of a program does not necessarily imply an endorsement by the Sierra Club.
