VR for the People: Lessons from Mass Market VR's Tumultuous First Decade

Ten years ago this month, the Oculus Rift Kickstarter shook the tech community to its core. A duct-taped-together prototype built by nineteen year old Palmer Luckey convinced the industry's best and brightest that compelling VR was not only possible, but tantalizingly close to being viable as an affordable, mass-market technology.

What ensued was a roller-coaster of multi-billion-dollar acquisitions, breakneck technological advances, stealth product launches, political defenestrations, and a pitched battle over what VR for the People should look like and who should control it.

This month we take a close look at Consumer VR's first decade and discuss what lessons we can learn from it as VR, and its ambitious sibling, AR, mature and begin to reshape the way we interact with the world and each other.
