The Great Swamp, also known as the Great Patterson Swamp, is located in eastern Putnam and Dutchess counties, in New York. The swamp covers almost 6,000 acres of land making it one of the largest wetlands in the state. Between 1744 and 1757, Pine Island, a ledge in the middle of the swamp, served as a camp for a set of counterfeiters who printed thousands of 20 Shilling Rhode Island notes.
