What we're about
Hello and Welcome! This group is for humanists who want to serve their community.
We will do community service projects that align with humanist goals in the DC metro area - DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland.
Humanist-themed projects include: helping disadvantaged children/adults, protecting the environment, caring for animals, and supporting the community in times of need.
More on Humanism (thanks to John Shook for this!):
Although people concerned for this world and everyone in it are getting tired of divisive labels, many people with community and progressive values call themselves a 'humanist'.
More and more people are finding humanism as a philosophical home for expressing how they pursue ethical lives of personal fulfillment and social responsibility. There's no need to argue over more labels if we can agree on this priority.
Humanism offers a nonreligious basis for promoting moral values, preserving this one world we share, inspiring ideals of equality and justice, greeting life's joys and handling life's troubles, and living with fulfilling purpose.
Humanist thinking is as old as ancient Greece, India, and China. Its behind Thomas Jefferson's vision for democracy and Gandhi's call for love.
Humanism moves into action wherever people of good will get beyond churches and creeds to simply focus of doing good for its own sake.
