Revolutionizing Biology with Personal Genomics
The cost of sequencing the human genome has been declining exponentially which has put applications within the reach of researchers and consumers that were only dreamt of previously. This talk provides a comprehensive overview of genomics, genomic sequencing technologies, the consumer genomics landscape, how genomic data is already actionable from a personal perspective, and a new effort in DIYgenomics citizen science with peer-based research cohorts to replicate and extend genomic studies.
Melanie Swan - Principal, MS Futures Group
Melanie Swan is a genomics researcher, hedge fund manager, and leader in the Health 2.0 movement. She is focused on translational research in emerging high-impact science areas. Recent publications include “Multigenic Condition Risk Assessment in Direct-to-Consumer Genomic Services,” “Engineering Life into Technology,” and “Emerging Patient-Driven Health Care Models.” She serves as an advisor to research foundations, government agencies, corporations, and startups. Melanie has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from Georgetown University. She is an advisor and faculty member at Singularity University.
Raymond McCauley - CTO and Founder, Exponential Biosciences
Raymond McCauley is currently working on sequencing and gene expression R&D. He has over 15 years of experience in the biotechnology and high tech arenas, with Illumina, Ingenuity Systems, QIAGEN Genomics, Applied Carbon, various startups and governmental agencies, and including a stint as executive producer for PBS television series with TANSTAAFL Media.
