Data Journalism - Can it really change the world or is it simple a case that…
Data Alone is Not Enough?

The media world is often characterised as a crass, revolving parade of fads and gimmicks populated with phalanx of snake-oil merchants and smart-talking, smart-ass, smooth-talking know-alls, who speak a truth - their perceived truth of our shared-existence in this multi-dimensional world.

They talk, write, broadcast, blog, comment (especially now) about what are the facts, the data, of whatever is top of the news agenda worthy of inquiry that day. And nobody agrees as to what is a certain truth.

But what are facts, what is news, what is data when it comes to telling a story, to laying out the facts.

Can Data Journalism lift the collective public-standing of journalist from being considered the equivalent of used-car salespersons to that of paramedics or nurses?

This month's presenter, Greg Hall invites you take a ride with him on the wild-side of spreadsheets and how journalists are getting into big data to tell you stories across a myriad of platforms about your neighbourhood, your town, your country, your world and perhaps redeem their profession and save their arses!

He's worked across print, radio and television in a host of roles; reporter, producer, content-creator, interviewer and media consultant, since he joined the profession in the mid-80s. He's co-owned and run a production company Lockout Productions which made documentary film Lockout - Australia's Most Violent Industrial Dispute, which screened on The History Channel for five years.

His interest in data journalism began in the early 2000's when the industry continued to be challenged by technological changes and the rise of social media platforms were becoming the daily staple for "news" consumption.

He twits @Truthtypist and is currently President of The Lunaticks Society, home of The NEWi Awards, now into its 10th year.
