Backpacking/Camping 101 - Presentation, Discussion and Show & Tell

Land Trust Trailhead Parking

This is the first event in a series this spring to get people who might be interested in camping and backpacking up to speed and ready for a backpacking or camping adventure. On February 23, the Sierra Club of North Alabama will lead a Backpacking/Camping 101 Class where we will discuss what to expect on a backpacking trip, the gear needed, preparations and how to either get started camping/backpacking or to help people wanting to transition from camping to backpacking. This will be a discussion on the basics and include some show and tell of equipment. You will be provided a list of equipment you will need to camp/backpack safely. This will be an outdoor event so dress for the weather... folding chairs may be helpful. Additionally, there will be two follow-up events: March 30-31 Sierra Club will host an overnight camp-out in the Monte Sano State Park to give people a chance to try out any new camping gear or techniques in a fun, safe environment, close to home, with experienced campers ready to help with camp/tent set-up. We are planning to have a camp cooking demonstration and a social bonfire. May 11-12 Sierra Club will host an overnight back-packing trip at the Cathedral Caverns State Park to allow people to have a fun, low risk back-packing experience. The hike to the camp-site is about 1 mile from the trailhead. Again we will have experienced backpackers to help with camp/tent set up. The two follow-up camping/backpacking events will be posted soon, on Meetup as their own events, keep your eyes out for those posts.

Location visible to members

Let's get some exercise! We usually walk a little over 2 miles within an hour. We walk 30 minutes in, then 30 minutes back. This is a non hosted event. Whoever RSVPs Yes, please plan on being there. We meet at the entrance of the trailhead, where the sidewalk ends and the asphalt starts. We wait a few minutes after the start time before we head out. thanks!

Join us again for another Outdoor Club South Social. We will be going to Oshi Poke Bowl and Sushi in Downtown Huntsville. • See old friends or make some new ones. • Discuss local outdoor activities. • Talk about and/or plan upcoming trips. • Talk about wildplaces conservation efforts. • Have a beer, and a bite to eat ... how bad can that be? There is no presentation or agenda, come out and have some fun.
