Advanced Civilization! (April 10th)

This is the classic game of civilization building that inspired the computer game Civilization. It's been on the list of top games for 29 years and is still going strong (currently #57 on the boardgamegeek list). It's out of print solely due to idiot copyright struggles over the title with the makers of the computer game. It's hard to find a copy of this game so this is a rare opportunity to try it out. It doesn't play like the computer game or really anything out on the market. Basically each player is in control of a civilization that carves out a niche around the Mediterranean. While there is some combat, it's mostly a matter of strategically moving your growing number of pieces around to grab and keep some space. This is not a wargame. Instead the goal is to build cities, obtain trade cards, have frenetic trade sessions with the other players to corner the market on some commodity, and then trade them in for tech advances that help protect you against the waves of disasters that continually threaten to pummel you back into the stone age. At the end the player with the most points wins. This is a fairly long game so plan on playing till about 7pm (we'll order out) and definitely don't sign up if you can't stay till the end. Be sure to sign up quickly so you don't miss this rare opportunity to play one of the best games ever designed!
