What we're about

The Purpose of the Group

To encourage people with an interest in facilitation to meet together in the South West of England for networking, learning and mutual support.

Who should join

Anybody with an interest in group process facilitation, including facilitators and others who use or commission facilitation. Members of IAF (the International Association of Facilitators) and non-members are equally welcome.

Why?

Facilitation is the art of "making things easier" for a group to achieve its desired results. Every meeting or process that is facilitated has an impact on the individuals and the groups of which they are a part. Good facilitation can change the way people think and act, and ultimately support them to positively change the world around them.

Facilitation is relatively new as a profession, but it is emerging in ever new and diverse settings. Some facilitators run their own companies, providing facilitation services on contract, some work full time as facilitators in companies, universities, or non profit organisations. Many people do facilitation without thinking or describing themselves as facilitators.

We asked some of our regulars what they have appreciated most about IAF E&W Meetups and why should others be interested - they replied:

• "The sharing of ideas" - Jonathan Bannister (https://twitter.com/jlbLDN/status/969847955514683393)

• "Meeting diverse practitioners of facilitation - and learning together" - Michael Ambjorn (https://twitter.com/michaelambjorn/status/969584841137250304)

"Expanding my thinking AND facilitation practice through peers generously sharing their ideas" - Andi Roberts CPF (https://twitter.com/Andi_Roberts/status/969622254375096320)

• "It's a brilliant initiative - a great way to build your facilitation skills whilst networking with like-minded sorts" - Neil Fogarty (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6377818147197714432?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A6377818147197714432%2C6377819903281500160%29)

• "Diversity of input, quality of input, creation of our "own space", snowball effect over time as our numbers have grown, commitment of some key players @martingilbraith @orford @penny_walker_sd to name a few" - Mike Pounsford CPF (https://twitter.com/mikepounsford/status/969846033667772417)

• "#IAFMeetups offer a wonderful opportunity to learn from each other, to share experiences and to practice new ways of facilitation in a friendly and fun environment. I look forward to each meet up and enjoy being with fellow facilitators from different nationalities" - Pinar Akkaya (https://twitter.com/PINARAKKAYA/status/970337315561320448?s=09)

• "Learning. Every meetup I have attended I have learnt more about facilitation from peers. It’s also great to feel a sense of belonging to a community with shared values and common goals. I think this feeling of being part of a profession or industry has all sorts of benefits to me as an individual (now a CPF) and my business." - Sean Blair CPF (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6374213391011188736?commentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Acomment%3A%28activity%3A6374213391011188736%2C6375745011706925056%29)

• "Setting out as a facilitator on my own was a scary decision but I have met so many great people through the meet ups, weather thats someone to run an idea past or even to try out something new with. Its a really wonderful community to be a part of!" - Camilla Gordon (https://twitter.com/CamillaGordon/status/970267520685965312?s=19)

• "I love meeting other facilitators - I feel I can relax and share openly, have fun and learn loads. It's also great to share a skill or approach with facilitators - people ask such great questions and I learn more about the thing I'm sharing every time! There's a generosity and love of learning which makes these meet-ups special. And a surprisingly wide range of people and ways that they use their skills" - Penny Walker (https://www.facebook.com/groups/IAFEnglandWales/permalink/2069387650053768/?comment_id=2074416402884226&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R%22%7D)
