Orange County Peaks: Peak 808 and Peak 867 in Laguna Coast Wilderness
This is a 4.5 mile step-up to intermediate hike with 1,100' of elevation gain. Trailhead parking requires a $3 fee. Let's meet at 7:50am at Willow Staging Area on Laguna Canyon Road (near corner of El Toro Road - see map) for meet-n- greet and gear check, hike will start promptly at 8:00am. Total time for the event is 3 hours.
We'll hike along oak and sycamore shaded trails and traverse rock outcroppings in an area of Laguna that was once a cattle ranch. There are numerous caves and scenic weather-sculpted sandstone formations along the northbound Stagecoach South Trail which is our initial route from the parking area. After 3/4 mile we'll start a westerly ascent up a rock outcropping and make our way along a rock and brush trail to Peak 808. Descending from 808, we'll drop down to a saddle then climb a steep trail to Peak 867 (some scrambling required). After a brief rest we'll retrace our steps to the parking area.
Lug sole boots or good trail shoes are recommended, bring snacks and something to drink while you're on the trail. If you're into peak lists, these peaks are on the 33 and 34 peak Orange County lists, and on the 55 peak Santa Ana Mountains List.
