Onshoring by design: competing successfully against low-cost nations

Join us at Evolve Group in Crestmead for breakfast and hear from Evolve Group Founder, Ty Hermans who aims to win $400 million of production back to Australia over the next decade. An obsessive focus on every part of design – both for the end product and for manufacture – and every part of the supply chain is vital to producing in Australia, believes Hermans, who says his company’s edge is in being a design-led manufacturer rather than a manufacturing-led manufacturer. Low-cost nations have the advantage of “throwing labour” at a problem, but this is surmountable. He concedes that making a client rethink every input for production can be “confronting”, and has been met with grumbles in the past, even though the client eventually realises what’s been achieved. “We focus on almost any medium; we are very strong in plastics and composites, but we work across steel fabrication, precast concrete, timber, electrical components and assemblies, basically anything in the hardware space. Our absolute benchmark is we add value or we get out of the way – we will never add cost or complexity to a project.” One standout in recent years has been the Flow Hive, a concept for a new beehive from Stuart and Cedar Anderson. The Andersons’ viral sensation broke crowdfunding records in 2015, raising $US 12.5 million on Indiegogo. Evolve optimised the Flow Hive product and handled the design-for-manufacturing development as well as manufacture and global outbound logistics from their Logan based factory. The product won the team a prestigious 2016 Good Design award, ahead of the likes of Tesla, Google, Microsoft and Miele. This high-profile project showed that Australian companies do not need to look overseas for suppliers.
