Title: Designing privacy by design

Abstract: Privacy is by turns deeply personal and intuitive, or legalistic and arcane. Most IT professionals have been trained in "Privacy 101" but upon hearing that "privacy is not a technology issue", we can be forgiven for switching off. Privacy training is rarely framed in light of how IT actually works, so non-lawyers usually have an incomplete understanding of the Collection, Use and Disclosure principles. By the same token, a purely legal treatment of privacy ignores the realities of database schemas, event logs, and metadata.

This presentation bridges privacy and real world IT. It covers a number of things you might not know about privacy; for instance, are you aware that the Privacy Act 1988 doesn't use the words 'private' and 'public'? And what was wrong with Google's StreetView cars collecting unencrypted wifi data from the public domain? We will discuss how privacy can be built into new systems, by extending Threat & Risk Assessment methods and using Information Asset Inventories.

Speaker: Stephen Wilson from (@Steve_Lockstep) specialises in strategic research, analysis and advice in digital identity and privacy.

Purpose: To bring together system administrators, ICT professionals, computer/network programmers/administrators. Visitors welcome. Bring friends or colleagues; we welcome visitors. Please consider the benefits of becoming a member: .
