World Interaction Design Day is an annual event where we come together as a united global community to show how interaction design improves the human condition. This years theme is Trust & Responsibility.

📢 - The talk: Are we (really) ready for self-driving cars?

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have made the decades-old dream of self-driving cars a reality. Some manufacturers have stated that fully autonomous cars could be commercially available within five to ten years. However, researchers in the field of AI say that we are decades away from a reality where self-driving cars are commonplace on our roads. Furthermore, recent consumer surveys have seen a decline in the number of people who want to own a self-driving car.

Why do the manufacturers and researchers have such different opinions of whether the technology is ready or not? And what is the reason for why drivers are losing interest in self-driving cars?

In this presentation, I will explore these questions and consider how the design of advanced technology can greatly influence user’s perception, trust and willingness to use that technology.
