What we're about

This group was started because several Meetup members have expressed an interest in kayaking and canoeing. We all know it's always more fun and safer to go paddling with others.
The purpose of this group is to provide a group of fellow paddlers with whom to go kayaking and canoeing in a family friendly environment. A large group of people will provide a wide variety of experiences from which we can all enhance our abilities.
This group is open to all levels of paddling experience but will be primarily be best suited for those of beginner and intermediate skills. Safety is always a top priority.

Members don't need to own a boat to belong to this group. Our group sponsor, Freedom Kayak Adventures has several boats to rent for those who don't own a kayak. But once you've been paddling a few times you will want to buy one.

Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show Club Booth

Indiana State Fairgrounds

The Indianapolis Boat Sport & Travel Show will be here in February. Once again we have been invited to set up at the club booth to promote IYAK and kayaking in general. Volunteers will be asked to answer questions any show attendees might have and pass out flyers, etc. We will need volunteers to man the booth throughout the show. We'd like to have two people per shift. All members are welcomed to help. If you don't feel as if you are qualified to represent the group we'll try to partner you with a more experienced member. Booth volunteers normally get free admission into the show. Plan to come early or stay late so you can walk around and see the entire show. This is a good show for those interested in outdoor recreation. You may bring guests with you but only members who volunteer to man the booth will get free admission to the show. Discount tickets will be available for your guests. There is a fee for parking at the fairgrounds. We will be set up in the Blue Ribbon Pavillion (Horse Barn.) Use the main entrance across the street from the grandstands. The exact location of the club booth isn't known at this time. That information will be posted as soon as it is determined. Two Hour Tuesday - Eagle Creek Reservoir Biweekly Paddle

Eagle Creek Boat Ramp

Two Hour Tuesday Eagle Creek Reservoir Biweekly Paddle Level: Easy - Beginner or Intermediate or Advanced (multiple groups). Kayak or SUP! Paddling isn't just for the weekends! This event is a part of our weekly paddling series. From Spring thru Fall, every other Tuesday, we meet for an evening of fun, social and/or fitness paddling. On this Tuesday, we'll be out on Eagle Creek Reservoir, while on the alternating Thursdays, we'll be out on Geist Reservoir. This event's levels are great for families, beginners and the seasoned paddler. We usually have a large turnout and possibly split into smaller groups, focusing on beginners, fitness, or those just out for a steady paddling pace. We will be meeting at the Dandy Trail boat ramp, located about a block north of Rick's Cafe Boatyard, every other Tuesday evening at 6:00pm, launch at 6:30pm and plan to be off the water by 8:30pm. We usually go out to dinner as a group afterward. The boat ramp entrance fee is $5, cash only. You can optionally purchase yearly passes. If you don't need to drop off a boat at the ramp there is a free parking lot between Rick's and the boat ramp. If you park here you'll have to walk about 100 yards to get to the launch site. Suggested items to bring: Kayak or SUP, paddle, PFD, wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, weather radio, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, drybags, Ziplock bags, camera, binoculars, rope, headlamp or flashlight, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you. Rental Boats: If you need to rent a kayak, contact Freedom Kayak Adventures at[masked]. The cost for this event is $25 for a single seater and $35 for a tandem kayak. Event hosts reserve the right to cancel due to inclement weather. Any cancellation or adjustment to the schedule will be posted in this event's message thread. RSVP is per each event, not the entire summer. Please answer ALL of the questions when you RSVP. ---------------------------------------------------------------- WAIVER AND RELEASE FROM LIABILITY FOR KAYAKING, CANOEING AND ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES By RSVPing to, and attending this event you acknowledge you have read and agree to IYAK's Waiver of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/IYAK-Indiana-Kayakers/pages/25179426/Liability_Waiver/

Monroe Lake Moonlight Paddle

Crooked Creek Launch Ramp, Upper Lake Monroe Brown County.

Another full moon, another moonlight paddle. This time we're heading to Monroe Lake at the Crooked Creek Launch Ramp for the "Pink" moon. We will be paddling in the no-wake zone so we won't have to be concerned about high speed boat traffic. We will meet at 5:00pm and try to be on the water by 5:30-5:45pm. The sun sets around 8:27pm so we will have three hours of daylight to paddle. Pack a meal and we will stop along the shore for dinner. Special Safety Considerations: Be sure to have a headlamp or flashlight. The law requires you have to have a white light. A glow stick is nice to have attached to your PFD to make you visible in the darkness. Since it is easy to become disoriented in the darkness everybody is required to wear their PFDs while on the water. For additional safety, please pick a paddling buddy and stay together. Here is the map link to the launch site: https://goo.gl/maps/KGueJre97K52 Trip Difficulty: Easy Carpool/Caravan Site: We will meet at Focus Therapeutic Massage, 8711 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, 46239 at 2:45pm and will leave at 3:00pm. Rentals: For Kayak reservations with Freedom Kayak Adventures, call[masked]. Single seat kayaks are $50 and tandem boats are $60 for this event. The price includes boat, PFD, paddle and delivery to the launch site. Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, flashlight/headlamp, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you. * Due to paddling at night, you MUST wear your PFD and you MUST have some form of light on you or your boat for this trip * This event is on IN-DNR property, so regulations require your boat to have a 2018 Non-Motorized Boat Permit decal. They are available at most state parks or you can purchase one online or at the downtown Indy office for $5. Event hosts reserve the right to cancel due to inclement weather. Any cancellation or adjustment to the schedule will be posted in this event's message thread. Please answer ALL of the questions when you RSVP.
