What we're about

Why Improvisation?

Improvisation is a lot of fun, and a great way to build confidence and learn more about yourself. The style of improvisation that we do is all about connecting, engaging, and being in the moment. It's more about being human than being humorous, and even though we aren't aiming for comedy, it's often the outcome.

What happens in a class?

Each class will focus on a different aspect of improvisation. We will start with a couple of fun warm-up games, introduce exercises to practice new skills, and perform scenes for each other.

Do I need previous experience?

No previous improv experience is required. A performance background of any kind is a plus (acting, singing, dance, etc), but we will cater to the experience level of the group on the night.

What are "short-form" and "long-form"?

Each class will either focus on short-form or a long-form improvisation. In simple terms, short-form uses games to create a scene and each scene is a separate story. In long-form, there are no game structures, and each scene can become part of a larger story with returning characters.

If you want to focus more on one than the other, check the meetup description to know what we are doing on a given week.

Your teacher

Jonathan Briden is the main teacher for these classes. He is a world-class teacher, with over 30 years experience in improvisation. At times, guest teachers will be brought in. It's nice to have variety!

Performance Opportunities

From time to time we run special performances for regular attendees. There is also the potential to be invited to perform in our main shows with Impulse Theatre (http://impulsetheatre.co.nz/).

How much does it cost?

The first class is FREE! That way you can check it out and decide if it's something you'd like to continue with.

After that classes are $15, OR you can purchase a 5 class discount card for $10 per class.

You can pay in cash, or via internet banking. For account details, please check the Impulse Theatre website...
