What we're about

Welcome aboard our Travel Club!
We are an international community of travellers, based in Athens, eager to explore as much as possible the wondrous sights and experiences that our planet has to offer. Πράσινη Τέντα, Λυκαβηττός

Our open social gathering for all travellers in town! Leave your worries behind, join us for a drink, meet new friends, and share travel tales, tips or ideas!

We are finally free from lockdown, and we can meet in person again! We will gather at an amazing place, which finally reopened after many years, the Green Tent at the slopes of Mount Lycabettus, with great views towards Acropolis, the city, the sea, and the sunset! Might be a bit expensive, but the views should definitely be worth it!

We will gather a bit earlier than usual, at around 19.30, so we can have almost 1hr until the sunset. For those that prefer to meet beforehand, or don't want to walk to Lycabettus alone, we can meet at 19.00 at Syntagma (at the usual place, the deer statue), and walk to the hill together.

Participation fee: free! (pay what you order)
(+5€ annual membership for new/unpaid members)**
** Membership of 2020 also carries over to 2021 due to lockdown

*** Indie Horizons Travel Club has a 5€ annual membership tip, to cover basic organisational costs, which is paid on the first event of the year a member participates in. This is collected by the organisers, separately from any participation or other event fees. ***

The Traveller's Culture, Plato Academy

Πάρκο Μέτρο Σεπολίων

€10.00

*** Events are being adapted to the current coronavirus situation. ***

Broaden your mind and be a citizen of the world! Join us for a visit to museums, exhibitions or performances, discovering history, culture and ideas!
Part of Indie Horizons Travel Coaching Experiences: explore hidden Athens, enrich your journey, shift your perspectives.

Plato's Academy is one of the least known and appreciated ancient sites of Athens. Granted, it's just a pile of stones on the ground, and you can hardly imagine how magnificent and inspiring this place was a couple of millennia ago, although the grandeur is reconstructed at the Virtual Museum of the site (free). After our visit, we can relax with coffee at a local collective/social solidarity cafe, and discuss our experience.
We will start our walk at Sepolia metro station, the neighbourhood that NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo grew up (his basketball court is just 500m away).
Kolonos Hill, half way between the Academy and Sepolia metro, is known from the Oedipus tragedy of the same name, and has a couple of interesting monument (and a small theatre).
The nearby old Tobacco Factory is one of the newest additions to Athens' cultural spaces, housing the Parliament Library, and more to come.

Some Coaching Breadcrumbs (our discussion points):
- Plato's Legacy @Academy: Can you imagine a place like Raphael's "School of Athens" painting to the park around you, echoing the footsteps of Plato and Aristotle? Is their wondrous philosophy lost to the modern citizen, same as their footsteps? Is the world around us just an echo of the ideal? Was Plato the first socialist? What is your favourite Plato philosophy?
- Oedipus tragedy @Kolonos: is free will just the illusion of destiny? And if such things are pre-determined, should we feel guilt about them?
- From Zero to Hero @Sepolia: Giannis' meteoric rise and hypocritic acceptance by the public. How do we treat all these Giannises around us? Do we recognise a gem in the coal?

Meeting point: Sepolia Metro Station (at the big car park entrance)*
Total walking distance: ~2.5km (+1.5km return to Sepolia metro)
Participation fee: 10€ (cash at meeting point)
(+5€ annual membership tip for new/unpaid members)**

* If you come by car, you can meet us directly at Kolonos Hill, @11.00
** Membership of 2020 also carries over to 2021 due to lockdown

Exarcheia is a dynamic youthful area, mainly associated with anarchism, immigrant solidarity, and counter-culture. However, the neighbourhood is also full of innovative street food corners, especially for vegan and world cuisine! We will make a small tour through Exarcheia, passing by 3-4 different places to choose to grab a bite from. After the last stop, we can relax around Navarino Park, and engage in Travel Coaching, discussing our experience and issues of counter-culture, modern food, urban rejuvenation, and international politics.
