First Talk:
In this talk, Todd will welcome the attendees and will use the CIS 20 framework to provide an overview of the infosec space. The goal of this talk will be to provide an equal footing for further discussion and to gauge interest level and experience so that we can best situate this group to educate, inform and entertain everyone in future sessions.
About Todd Dow:
Todd Dow is a writer, geek, CF fundraiser & native Hamiltonian. Todd's family, baseball, infosec & devops are a few of his favourite things. During the day, Todd is the Information Security Officer at FirstOntario Credit Union in Hamilton, Ontario. In this role, Todd develops, manages and makes ongoing enhancements to the enterprise-wide strategic security plan for FirstOntario.
Second Talk:
This discussion will outline how a virtual CISO can help small to medium companies develop solid policies and practices to protect their information and to comply with regulations.
The stakes are rising on information security. Companies in Canada are facing increasing requirements to put comprehensive plans and procedures in place to ensure that private information is secured. New regulations, increasing threats, and customer demands are all putting companies under pressure to devote more resources to security.
A large organization will typically hire a full-time Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to manage security concerns. However, for small to mid-sized companies, this may not be a viable option. Hiring a virtual CISO may be the answer. During this presentation, Michael Ball will outline six reasons why companies should consider hiring a virtual CISO, and what services you should expect from a Managed Information Security Governance Practice.
About Michael Ball:
Over the past 30 years, Michael has had opportunity to work as Information Security Advisor with and for many of Canada's largest financial and Insurance brands. From Security Architect to IT Audit Mediator, to CISO in several distinguished organizations, Michael has championed governance, compliance and risk from a business values perspective. Currently, Michael and his team are working to provide an enterprise Information Security program as Virtual CISOs to several smaller brands that individually could not justify a full time CISO. They operate in such verticals as Law Firms, Wealth Management, Real Estate, Hospitality, Manufacture, HealthCare, Utilities, and Transportation.
