What we're about

This group is for women 50 and over who are interested in meeting new people, sharing common interests and exploring new ones. After your friends have retired and moved to Florida, here's a way to meet others. We're about talking, dining out, discussing books, taking trips, enjoying the performing arts, visiting museums, investigating new topics of interest and just getting out and hearing what others have to say. I hope you'll join us and share your interests and experiences with the group. Alone, we shrink our horizons. Together, we expand and thrive.

Needs a location

Hi Ladies,

Our Canasta Meetups are a great success! You've never played Canasta? No worries. It's very easy to learn and a lot of fun. If you used to play, but it's been a long time, it will come back to you. Promise! We have plenty of decks and score sheets. There's no need to bring anything, but a fun spirit.

To learn more about the game go to: www.bicyclecards.com or one of the Hoyle's Rules of Games books. There are also good "How To" videos on YouTube.

Hope you'll join us!

Let's Play Mah Jongg!

Needs a location

Hi Ladies,

Have you heard what people are saying about Mah Jongg? It originated in China. (True) It's for MENSA members only. (False) It's more difficult than Bridge. (False) See, not everything you hear is true. :-)

What is true: We have a lot of fun playing Mah Jongg on Wednesday night! Have you thought about joining us, but you've never played? Why not come and observe a few hands? If you think it's something you'd enjoy, we can teach you how to play.

Mah Jongg is a fascinating and challenging game, but it can be intimidating at first. To make it a little easier, you may want to take a look at the rules and learn about how it's played. There's a lot of information online and YouTube has some excellent tutorials.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • If you've RSVP'd and your plans change, please update your RSVP to "Not going."
  • We like to start play at 6:30 PM. If you plan to order food/drinks, please arrive early.

Hope you can make it!

May Book Discussion: THE MERMAID AND MRS. HANCOCK by Imogen Hermes Gowar

Hi Ladies,

Our May book selection is THE MERMAID AND MRS. HANCOCK by Imogen Hermes Gowar. Here's a partial summary from the Baltimore County Public Library website:

"One September evening in 1785, Jonah Hancock hears an urgent knocking on his front door near the docks of London. The captain of one of Jonah's trading vessels is waiting eagerly on the front step, bearing shocking news. On a voyage to the Far East, he sold the Jonah's ship for something rare and far more precious: a mermaid."

The summaries and reviews of the book are lengthy and very detailed. I didn't want to spoil the big reveal, so I only copied a snippet. :-)

Pages: 487
BCPL Availability: 8 hard copies

AMAZON availability: (Listed because BCPL availability is limited.)
Kindle E-book $12.49
Audible - Free with Audible trial
Paperback $11.05

After reading the reviews I'm looking forward to reading our May selection. It's another look at magical realism and women's issues of the time, still relevant today.

NOTE: The last Monday of May is Memorial Day. If that will prevent you from attending, please let me know and we can consider another date.
