About us

Welcome to Insight Meditation Scottsdale!

Insight Scottsdale is a 'politics free' zone and does not promote any political or activist ideologies or 'sides', explicitly or implicitly. All are welcome to practice meditation and learn the Dharma in a welcoming space regardless of political orientation. There is no 'side' that holds the corner on greed, hatred and delusion!

We practice in the Western Buddhist Vipassana tradition that has its roots in the Theravada Thai Forest and Burmese traditions, as taught by founding Western teachers Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg. Vipassana practice is alternatively known as 'Insight Meditation', or in more modern terminology is the practice that was originally called 'Mindfulness'.

Our meditation group meets from 7-8:30pm on Monday evenings in-person, in South Scottsdale. We sometimes offer class series and retreats by Genevieve or visiting senior teachers in the Western Vipassana tradition.

On Monday nights we offer a 40 minute sit, followed by a short dharma talk and facilitated dharma discussion led by founding teacher Genevieve Tregor. It is not necessary to have any experience with meditation to attend; some basic instruction is offered at the beginning of the meditation session.

About the Teacher:
Genevieve has been practicing Vipassana meditation since 2008 and has spent over a year and a half in intensive retreat; she teaches classes and retreats in the Buddhist tradition as well as in secular mindfulness contexts. Genevieve served on the faculty for Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach's International Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program for 6 years; and is fully trained in Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing (SE) trauma resolution modality.

From Howard Cohn, Senior Dharma Teacher and co-founder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center:

"[Genevieve] brings a depth and breadth of Insight Meditation practice that is unmatched in the Phoenix area. Her ability to guide meditators—from those just beginning to those exploring profound meditative depth—is rooted in years of dedicated practice, including extensive time in long, silent retreats.
Genevieve also has a gift for making the teachings practical and accessible, offering clear, everyday ways to bring practice into daily life. Over the years, she has mentored many mindfulness meditation teacher trainees through the program led by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, and I have enjoyed co-leading intensive retreats with her for participants from around the world.
Her contribution to this community has been extraordinary. She has given much time and energy to support the growth and sustainability of practice opportunities in the Valley"

This group is supported entirely by 'Dana', a Pali word that translates to the practice of generosity; everyone is welcome to attend and offer whatever feels generous in their heart according to their own circumstances. The opportunity to sit together and hear the Buddha Dharma cannot be given a price-tag. The Dana model is radical in the context of a 'fee for service' society; but it has existed for over 2500 years - from the time of the Buddha - which has allowed the teachings to be shared with everyone who wishes to hear them, regardless of income over centuries; those with greater resources 'subsidize' those with less. Dana does not mean 'free' - as nothing can survive or thrive in a vacuum! Financial offerings support the ability to pay rental and other costs of maintaining the group operationally; but also to support the well-being and ability of the teacher to devote herself to offer the teachings in integrity with an ongoing practice. Volunteering to support the community is another form of Dana that is highly valued. So, please do consider the importance of supporting financially, as well as through participation and volunteering, according to the value it holds for you and your own resources.
