RUTH SMETHURST: “Bringing The Sweetness Back into Life With a Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes.”
You know how every friendship group has the weird / slightly off centre one?! I was overcome with the joyful realisation that I AM THAT ONE FRIEND. From a strict religious upbringing, to street Theatre performance in Eastern Europe, gym rat with a fascination for bodies, to a fetish for Irish men from which the only good thing that ever came was my daughter Niamh and penchant for fiddle music. This gorgeous life I get to live constantly surprises me with learnings and lovings and challenges and chocolate. And the only thing I love more than coffee and my daughter is to live in a world where our collective stories get to wend their way into our hearts connecting, creating and inspiring us to become the amazing human beings we are. But the journey to this place of enjoying my imaginative and often quirky life came from my story or guilt ridden angst, hopeless resignation and almost losing my daughter to a disease that no one really knows until it moves into their home like a dementor from Azkaban. I speak fast, I share joy and most uniquely I spread imagination like chlamdydia in an episode of Skins.

RUSS GROOMS: “Using Music As A Tool To Manage Mental Health Challenges”
As a life-long musician diagnosed with bipolar 10 years ago, I have managed my condition through the creative outlet of music. Through this journey I have come to understand how changes in mood are essential to the creative process and have learnt to embrace my condition as a fundamental part of my artistic practice. This talk will involve some audience participation.

BEN CLENCH: "The Inspirational Memoir of Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor”
I had a horrific accident in 2010 being run over on the pavement in the Dominican Republic which instantly killed my girlfriend who was working in Haiti for the UN on relief work for the Earthquake that happened earlier that year! Surprisingly some doctors were just in front of the car that hit us and on hearing this they reversed to see what had happened. They saw the aftermath of what had happened and picked up my body and drove me straight to hospital, which undoubtedly saved my life. Following this the police knocked on my parent’s door at 1am and notified my family what had happened. There shock disbelief was that my Dad booked flights to get out there as soon as possible with my brother to make sure I got the treatment I needed and repatriate me. Since then I have done everything I can to recover, done another Masters run a half marathon and went back to Glastonbury. During my Masters I was seen by Hammersmith Hospital and they did some brain scans and asked several practitioners what they thought my outcome was and compared it to another patients scan who was in a wheel chair? Surprisingly they all said that I was in a wheel chair and the other guy was fine. He then advised me to write about this to give inspiration to others in similar situations. As such creativity is a wonderful way to overcome challenges in life.
