What we're about

InterPlay is an art form anyone can do. Participants are invited into movement, song, story, and connection through easy incremental steps. InterPlay honors and celebrates the unique expression of each individual in an affirmative, welcoming environment. InterPlay is an active, creative way to unlock the wisdom of the body. InterPlay integrates body, mind, heart and spirit. Life has become so fragmented. InterPlay helps to pull everything back together so we get more of what we want. InterPlay is devoted to fun. It teaches the language and ethic of play in a deep and powerful way. If you are convinced that seriousness is the path to inner wisdom, then you might want to look elsewhere. If you would like to become a “recovering serious person,” then InterPlay might be for you. InterPlay is firmly based in affirmation and looking for the good. You don’t have to think of yourself as creative in order to do InterPlay. We can teach you that part easily. We get far too much criticism in our lives already. We need to spend more time in the warm bath of acceptance. InterPlay is the perfect antidote to stress and cynicism. InterPlay is a community of people around the world who speak the shared language of a wide and deep variety of play. It is a body of bodies who enjoy contact and connection. You don”t have to dive in the deep end of InterPlay to learn and benefit from it, but it does exist and some wonderful folks are “swimming” there.

InterPlay Atlanta is a 501c3 nonprofit that uses improvisational structured play to foster freedom and joy, decrease stress and build just communities.

Sitting meditation, spiritual text and poetry will provide the springboard for this time of deep play. What is the “big story” moving through your life? How do we practice partnership with that “something more”? The practice of InterPlay makes room for the fullness we each embody.

InterPlay recognizes and playfully engages the challenging aspects of our humanity as well. Bring your full self out to play, explore, dream and rest through the easy forms of InterPlay.

Our STORY: Beginning in October 2018, Canan Arikan (from Turkey) and Ruth Schowalter (from the U.S.) gave birth to their dream of bringing together women seeking asylum in the U.S., those international women visiting or resettling in the U.S., and American citizens. They believed that through meal sharing and InterPlay, an active creative way to unlock the wisdom of the body, they could invite women to build bridges across cultural, faith, and language differences and have fun doing it!

Now, SIS is thriving! In an ever-changing world on the first Saturday of every month, women from various countries such as Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Jamaica, Japan, Iran, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States come together for 3 hours of connection.

GRATITUDE: Thanks to InterPlay co-founders Phil Porter and Cynthia Winton-Henry for 30 years of InterPlay. Deep appreciation to the First Christian Church of Decatur who is so welcoming to SIS as we use their bright sunny social hall each month. We are also grateful to InterPlay Atlanta, our 501c3 non-profit, that uses improvisational structured play to foster freedom and play, decrease stress and build just communities.
